Gling-Glo

Gling-Gló is an album released in 1990 by Björk Guðmundsdóttir & Tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar, a jazz band that featured Björk as lead singer. Most of the songs on the album are in Icelandic, but they also performed two in English: "Ruby Baby" and "I Can't Help Loving That Man". Like her first solo album from her 1977 titled Björk, Gling-Gló went platinum in Iceland.

Recording and composition

Most of the songs were recorded between September 1 and 3, 1990 at Stúdio Sýrland. "Ruby Baby" and "I Can't Help Loving that Man" were recorded on August 23, 1990 at Ríkisútvarpið (Icelandic National Broadcasting Service) for Djasskaffi, a radio show hosted by Ólafur Þórðarsson. It was produced by Tómas Magnús Tómasson, the bassist of Stuðmenn.

Several of these songs are covers of jazz classics translated into Icelandic. Three are sung to a remarkably different musical arrangement: "Bílavísur" (originally "The Blacksmith Blues"), "Ég veit ei hvað skal segia" ("Ricochet Romance" by Theresa Brewer) and "Pabbi minn" ("O Mein Papa"). "Séad sést ekki sætari mey" is an interpolation of "You Can't Get a Man with a Gun" by Irving Berlin, from the musical Annie Get Your Gun.
