Glamdring
Glamdring is a fictional sword that appears in the works of writer J. R. R. Tolkien, mainly The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Etymology
The name "Glamdring" is a compound word in Sindarin, which Elrond translated as "Hammer of enemies", although the term glam is more specific and refers to glamhoth, & #34;the shrill horde", that is, the orcs.
History
It was forged by the elves for King Turgon of Gondolin, one of the High Kings of the Noldor. It was Orcrist's twin sword, the weapon of Ecthelion of the Source, Captain of the city. The sword disappeared after the fall of Gondolin, at the end of the First Age of the Sun of Arda, being discovered in the Third Age by Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins and the company of the dwarves (as told in The Hobbit) in a troll cave, as part of a treasure that may have originated from the sack of Gondolin. Next to it appeared a short sword (relative to hobbit size; elves would consider it a dagger) also elvish, which Gandalf bestowed on Bilbo, who, in the course of the adventure, named it Sting or Dart. Glamdring had the ability to glow in the vicinity of orcs, like all elven-made swords. Gandalf wielded it throughout the War of the Ring. At the end of this he chose to leave her in the care of Aragorn, King Elessar, as part of his inheritance, before leaving for the Undying Lands of Valinor.
Glamdring in the film version
In New Zealand director Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, Glamdring is a beautiful double-edged, fisted sword, though Gandalf (played by Ian McKellen) is capable of wielding it one-handed. In the movie The Two Towers, when Gandalf tells how he defeated the Balrog, we can see a scene of the fight, where the magician raises his hand and lightning strikes it, while the blade of the sword flashes, attacks the chest of the beast, ending it. It has a runic inscription on the guard in Sindarin (Glamdring - Turgon Aran Gondolin, Tortha gar a matha Glamdring, Vegil Glamdring gud daelo. Dam an Glamhoth), whose translation would be: «Glamdring - Turgon king of Gondolin bears, holds, and wields the sword Glamdring, enemy of Morgoth's realm, hammer of orcs."
