Gilberto Gil (Gilberto Passos Gil Moreira) (June 26, 1942, Salvador, Bahia). He is a Brazilian singer, guitarist, composer and former Minister of Culture. His music has influences from various origins, including rock, reggae and various elements of Brazilian popular music (mainly samba and bossa nova). Since the 1960s, he has been a representative figure of the musical movement called Tropicalismo along with Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, María Bethânia and Tom Zé, among others.

He is also known for his political activity: since the 1980s he has supported citizen and political movements at the local and national level, many of them related to the demand for the rights of workers and Afro-Brazilians, and the defense of the environment; In 2003 he was appointed by Lula da Silva as Minister of Culture of Brazil, a position he held until 2008.

Biography

Gilberto Passos Gil Moreira was born into a middle-class family. His father is José Gil (doctor), and his mother Claudina Passos Gil Moreira (teacher). Although he was born in Salvador de Bahía, he lived his first years in Ituaçu, a small city in Bahía (Brazil) 530 km from the capital of the state. In December 1951 he moved to Salvador, to the house of a paternal aunt to finish primary school.

Between 1959 and 1961 he was part of the group Os Desafinados, playing the sanfona (or Brazilian accordion). In 1961 he took up the guitar as his main instrument, influenced by João Gilberto and bossa nova. In the early years of the '60s he dedicated himself to composing jingles while working as a collector of taxes. The first recording of his music occurs in 1962 on a record called & # 34; Bem devagar & # 34;, with the vocal ensemble As Três Baianas , where he participates playing the accordion. The first recording of Gil singing is also from that year, on an album with music made for Petrobras, where he interprets & # 34; Coça, coça, lacerdinha & # 34;.

In 1963 he recorded his first EP: Gilberto Gil - his music, his interpretation, which includes four of his songs. That year he met Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa and Tom Zé, with who established a lasting musical friendship, which would be fundamental to the history of tropicalismo.

In 1965 he moved to the city of São Paulo. That year he achieved national significance when his song Louvação became a hit when it was recorded by Elis Regina. In addition, he managed to stand out on television, in the program "O fino da bossa", hosted by Elis Regina. He decides in 1966 to leave his job to dedicate himself to music and moves to Rio de Janeiro where he records his first LP, which is released in 1967: Louvação .

In February 1969, at the height of tropicalismo, Gilberto Gil was imprisoned by the Brazilian dictatorship along with Caetano Veloso. They are released in July and forced into exile. They then leave for London, but not before putting together a farewell show, from which the album Barra 69 will be recorded. In August the single Aquele abraço was released, which would be the Bahian's first great success as a singer. The song would form part of his third solo album (which, like the previous and the following, took his own name). During his exile, he worked with members of bands as important as Pink Floyd, Yes or The Incredible String Band.He also wrote the soundtrack for the movie Copacabana mon amour and recorded his fourth solo album.

In January 1972 he returned to his country. During the following years, he toured nationally and recorded multiple solo albums (being Expresso 2222, Refazenda and Refavela the most renowned) and with other artists. (Temporada de verão and Doces bárbaros, among others).

During the European summer of 1978, he toured the old continent, something that would be repeated almost year after year. The albums Nightingale (1978) and Realce (1979) confirm him as a world figure and bring him closer to the jazz genre. In 1979 he released an EP containing Não chore mais, a version of No woman, no cry (from B.Vincent). That song becomes his biggest sales success: the album sold 750 thousand copies .

In the '80s his fame continued to grow, repeating national and world tours, and recording a large number of albums. He works with a large number of artists on their albums and tours (Jimmy Cliff, The Wailers, João Gilberto, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, among many others). In 1985 he celebrated his twenty-year career with a great event organized by the poet Waly Salomão, called "Gil, 20 light-years", lasted a week and the most important representatives of Brazilian popular music and rock from that country participated.

In 1987 Gil was elected as president of the "Fundação Gregório de Matos", something like the Municipal Secretariat of Culture of Salvador, a position he would occupy until the following year, when he left it to dedicate himself to his campaign as a candidate for councilor for the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB). He is elected to that role, which he served until 1992, highlighting his concern for environmental issues. He left the PMDB to join the Green Party in 1990.

Despite his political activity, he never gives up music. The 1990s are marked by the large number of awards and recognitions he receives. During those years he continued to record several albums, among which Parabolicamara, MTV Unplugged, Tropicalia 2 (with Caetano Veloso) and Quanta gente veio ver (which received the Grammy Award in 1999 for "Best World Music Album").

When Luís Ignácio Lula da Silva assumed the presidency of Brazil in January 2003, he chose Gil to be the government's Minister of Culture, a position from which he resigned in 2008. His tenure was characterized by an anthropological perspective of culture that stimulated diversity culture and citizen participation in public policies. Likewise, his management was known internationally for his defense of free software and for his attempts to make copyright more flexible. He defended the right of access to culture as a fundamental right, a principle that he presented in his inauguration speech as minister:

"The State does not make culture, the State creates the conditions of universal access to symbolic goods, the conditions of creation and production of cultural goods, whether artifacts or mindfacts. It is because access to culture is a basic right of citizenship, such as the right to education, health, the healthy environment."

While he was minister he continued to dedicate himself to music, even winning his album Eletroacustico the Grammy Award in 2006; however, most of the records released by him at that time were live. In 2008, after his resignation from the ministry, he released his first album with his own and unpublished songs since 1997: Banda larga cordel .In 2009 he released the CD / DVD BandaDois , recorded live; the following year he releases Fé na festa, whose live version wins the Latin Grammy Award in 2011 as "Best Brazilian Roots Music Album – Native Regional".

In 2012 the film Viramundo was released, directed by the Swiss Pierre-Yves Borgeaud, a documentary in which Gilberto Gil travels through the southern hemisphere of our planet, starting from Bahia (Brazil) and passing through Australia, South Africa and the Amazon. In March 2012 Gil recorded with the Petrobras Symphony Orchestra the CD / DVD Concerto de Cordas & Rhythm Machines at the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro, which gives rise to tours of Europe and South America. On August 5, 2016, he participates in the opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, singing Isso Aqui, or Que É next to Caetano Veloso and Anitta.

In January 2018, he gave a show with percussionists from the Vai-Vai Samba School, whose presentation for the Carnival was inspired by his work. In August 2018, he released his album Ok Ok Ok with the Biscoito Fino label. The album was chosen as the 4th best Brazilian album of 2018 by Rolling Stone Brasil magazine and is one of the 25 best Brazilian albums of the second half of 2018, according to the São Paulo Association of Art Critics. In 2019, he won the Latin Grammy for Best Brazilian Popular Music Album.

In August 2019, she participated in the Criança Esperança program on Rede Globo, where she sang a version of her song Palco with the singer Anitta. In this same month, the soundtrack of the Grupo Corpo show, "GIL", is released. In November of the same year, she does a show with the band BaianaSystem and enters into a creative process to write unpublished songs for the album Giro (2019) by the singer Roberta Sá, an album produced by the son of She Bem Gil.
