Germán Adrián Ramón Burgos (Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires, April 16, 1969), known as El Mono Burgos, is a former Argentine soccer player and current coach. He played as a goalkeeper.

Biography

He debuted in the Argentine League on September 3, 1989 with Ferro Carril Oeste against Newell's Old Boys.

In 1994 he signed for River Plate to replace Sergio Goycochea, who went on to play for Club Deportivo Mandiyú, establishing himself as a goalkeeper at the international level and where the fans nicknamed him "Mono", due to its ungainly appearance.

With River Plate he won the 1994 Apertura titles (finishing this tournament without having lost a game), the 1996 Copa Libertadores de América (where he had an outstanding performance in the first final, saving a key penalty), the 1996 Apertura Championship, the 1997 Clausura Championship, the 1997 Apertura Championship and the 1997 South American Super Cup.

In the 1999/00 season he went to Spain, where he signed for RCD Mallorca, where he played two seasons. At this stage of his football career, Germán Burgos thought about leaving football since his musical inclinations were stronger. In 2001 he signed for Atlético de Madrid, a team with which he managed to be promoted to the First Division in his first season and where he hung up his gloves in the 2003/04 campaign.

Withdraw

At the beginning of 2003 he was diagnosed with kidney cancer which kept him away from football for a few months. In an interview he commented on his reaction upon hearing the news with his usual humor: “It was something unexpected. They come one day and tell you: you have to have surgery because it's cancer. I had to play that weekend against Mallorca and I told the doctor: I better have the operation on Monday. But the doctors and Luis told me that I had to have the operation now and we decided to do it as quickly as possible and it was right."

After his retirement, he worked in Madrid as a commentator on Radio Nacional de España in the sports program Tablero Deportivo and on TeleMadrid.

During 2010 he was a sports coach for the contestants of the reality show Football Cracks.

Coach: first experience

In the 2010/11 season, he debuted as head coach, taking charge of Real Carabanchel, which he promoted.

Second coach

From the summer of 2011 until December of the same year, he was part of the technical team of Racing Club de Avellaneda as field assistant to Diego Simeone. The resignation of Diego "Cholo" Simeone in charge of Racing Club de Avellaneda on December 19, 2011 caused it to be confirmed on December 23, 2011 that Diego Pablo Simeone would be the new coach of Atlético de Madrid for the remainder of the season and the following season. Thus, since December 2011, he has been Simeone's second coach at Atlético de Madrid. Since his arrival, the club has won two Europa Leagues (the Second of which was him on the bench in the final as first coach due to the expulsion of Simeone in the semi-finals), two European Super Cups (with him also being on the bench as first coach in the second final), a Copa del Rey, a League and a Spanish Super Cup, in addition to having reached the final of the Champions League in twice. During 18 games in which Simeone was suspended, the "Mono" Burgos served as the first coach of the red and white team from the beginning of the matches.

He is a regular commentator on sports broadcasts, as well as in social gatherings, on Radio Marca.

In March 2021, Newell's Old Boys announces the hiring of Burgos as technical director of the 'lepra' team. On June 8, 2021, he terminated the contract with Newell's Old Boys by mutual agreement with the club.

In February 2022, his arrival in Greece was announced, as the new technical director of Aris Thessaloniki. He was dismissed from the position on August 29, 2022, after the defeat against Pantolikos by 3 to 1 on the second date of the Greek league.

Curiosities

He was a goalkeeper who used to play many meters away from his goal whenever he could, proof of this is that in 1996 in the match between Vélez Sarfield and River Plate, the also eccentric goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert scored a goal for him foul from midfield. While all the players were distracted, Chilavert took the opportunity to take the free kick and score, taking advantage of Burgos' poor position.

On November 21, 1999, and while he was a footballer for RCD Mallorca, he punched striker Serrano hard in a league match between his team and RCD Espanyol. Germán received a harsh sanction that kept him off the field for 11 games.

Its appearance is also worth highlighting. During his time at RCD Mallorca he used to wear very brightly colored shirts. He used to change the colors of his shirts during breaks in games. At Atlético de Madrid, his clothing attracted attention, as he was one of the few goalkeepers who wore long pants and a cap. His red cap with the Atlético de Madrid shield, the blonde highlights in his long hair, always chewing gum during games, his sleeves rolled up at the elbows, or covering his long pants with red knee-length socks, were signs of identity that made Burgos a most striking goalkeeper.

During his career he also stood out for the eccentricity of his stops. He trusted in the posture of God, when facing the one-on-one matches with the rival forwards, in which Burgos was waiting for them, kneeling on the ground and opening his arms, giving great fame to this peculiar posture, and his ability to stop rivals in this type of actions is widely recognized. On many occasions, when Atlético de Madrid clearly dominated the scoreboard, he used to delight the stands by making saves with his chest or clearing balls with his head instead of catching them with his hands and arms. Of great fame was the penalty that the Portuguese Luís Figo took at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. Figo threw the penalty towards Burgos' right side with great power, the goalkeeper guessed the direction of the shot, but was not able to place his hands in time, so Burgos stopped the penalty with his face. This blow caused a severe hemorrhage in his nose. Burgos continued playing that match with his nose holes covered with cotton.

In his last season at Atlético de Madrid, when he did not enjoy the coach's confidence, and was relegated to the background, Burgos was in charge of playing the Copa del Rey matches. In the eliminatory match against Sevilla F. C. at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuan stadium, Burgos conceded a goal from a free kick taken by Brazilian Julio Baptista when he tried unsuccessfully to deny it with his chest.

Famous for his ability in one-on-ones and stopping penalties, Burgos was always one of the most loved players by the Colchonera fans. The season in which Atlético de Madrid returned to the First Division after having spent the previous two seasons in "hell" Second Division, Germán "el Mono" Burgos starred in a famous advertisement with the slogan We are here coming out of a sewer, in which he represented the rise of Atlético de Madrid after its descent into hell.

In 2003, coinciding with the centenary of Club Atlético de Madrid, the Spanish singer Joaquín Sabina mentioned Mono Burgos in the club's official centenary anthem, along with several prominent players throughout the club. throughout the club's history.

National team

In 1995 Burgos made his debut with the Argentine National Team and as a footballer he was part of the squad in the France 1998 and Korea-Japan 2002 world championships.

With the Albiceleste he played a total of 38 games and was no longer called up in 2003.
