History

In the XVII century part of the land that had belonged to Juan Torres de Vera y Aragón was acquired by Pedro Rojas and Acevedo, who produced hides and fats.

Between 1825 and 1855 the area in question known as “Paraje del Ombú Preciado”, thus appearing in the census ordered by the Buenos Aires governor, Brigadier General Juan Manuel de Rosas, on February 19 of 1838, with a rural population of some ninety souls. The first settlement of importance would be the so-called Pueblito Echenagucía, today Villa Echenagucía, when the lands of the Quinta “Los sauces” of Mariano Echenagucía were divided as of December 17, 1894, for which the Villa Echenagucía is the oldest neighborhood in current Gerli. The outskirts, populated by extensive farms, were divided to allow the formation of new population centers: Villa Fischer (today within West Gerli) in 1900, Villa Garbarino in 1905, Villa Aurora in 1908, Villa Angélica in 1910, Villa Moss in 1911, Villa Isabel and Villa Ideal in 1912, Villa Argentina, Villa Iris and Villa Calcagnino in 1913 and in 1914 the now populous Villa Modelo.

Its foundation itself was dictated on March 30, 1909 with the approval of the subdivision of the lands by the Deliberative Council of Avellaneda. Antonio Gerli was the owner of those lands and had requested to divide them. On August 6, the part of Gerli located in the Lanús district is declared a city. The first parishes were inaugurated in 1928 and baptized with the name of San Antonio de Padua Chapel, today San Antonio de Padua Parish, in the Villa Echenagucía area, and Cardenal Ferrari Chapel, today San José de los Obreros Parish, in the Villa Angelica. The railway station dates from May 16, 1910, as "Parada Gerli", being known five years before as "Apeadero Piñeiro", adopting the official name of Estación Gerli three years later: January 4, 1913 by decree of the provincial government.

In 1911, the “Pablo Spínola” first aid room was inaugurated, later called Hospital Vecinal de Villa Porvenir, and two years later the Teatro La Mosca, which later became the Cine Madrid and operated until 1928. Both in the area of Villa Porvenir. The East Gerli First Aid Room was inaugurated on April 5, 1927 and the West Gerli First Aid Room, today West Gerli Neighborhood Hospital, on October 17, 1933.

On July 12, 1930, a machinist raised the Bosch Bridge to allow the passage of the boat “Itaka”. Tram No. 75 of line 105, which was passing by, did not stop in time and fell into the Riachuelo. Many residents of Gerli, Piñeiro and Lanús died in this tragic accident.

In 1944, with the creation of the Lanús Party, Gerli was divided: the southeast sector became part of the new district, while the rest continued to belong to Avellaneda.

On November 1, 1967, workers and union delegates from the city created "Nuestro Mundo," the first homosexual group in Argentina and South America. It is from this fact that month is taken as the "month of pride" and the LGBT Pride March of Buenos Aires is held

On November 11, 2005, the first bill for the recognition of the new Municipality of Gerli was presented to the Legislature of the Province of Buenos Aires.

Population

Gerli has 64,340 inhabitants. (2001), distributed as follows: 31,090 inhabitants in the part of Avellaneda and 33,250 in the part of Lanús, thus resulting in a density of 9,151 inhab./ km². This represents 9% and 7% of the total for each party respectively. In both parties, Gerli is the 5th locality by number of inhabitants, although this represents the last place in Lanús and in Avellaneda there are three lower localities.

In the previous census, there were 69,365 (1991) (Avellaneda 33,255 and Lanús 36,110), so that in the ten years between the last censuses the population decreased by 7.2% (6.5% in Avellaneda and 7.9% in Lanús).

Municipal Delegation

Gerli only has a Municipal Delegation from the Partido de Avellaneda, inaugurated on August 10, 1987 through Municipal Ordinance No. 7912/87. It is located at 1947 Basavilbaso street, between Campichuelo and Cangallo de Gerli Este, in the old building where the well-remembered Banco de Ojos (Ophthalmological Hospital) operated in the 1970s.

Its Municipal Delegates since then were: Emilio Arispe (UCR), Jorge Schuver (UCR), Edgardo R. Bacigalupo (UCR), Dr. Jorge José Lorenzo (PJ), Ricardo Lorenzo (PJ), Emilio Arispe (UCR), Alfonso Lamarmora (PJ), Amanda Beatriz de Marzo (PJ) and Gisella Sabrina Salerno (FPV).

The Society of Volunteer Firefighters of Echenagucía-Gerli was founded on January 12, 1923 as "Volunteer Firefighters and First Aid of the Villas Garbarino, Modelo, Echenagucía and Progreso de Echenagucía".

It has its Headquarters at 730 Heredia Street, Gerli Este, telephone numbers 4204-3113 and 4204-7748.

The area of Gerli Este, within the district of Lanús, is within the jurisdiction of the Volunteer Firefighters of Lanús (East); the neighborhoods of Villa Argentina, Villa Oyuela and Villa Marconi are within the jurisdiction of the Sarandí Volunteer Firefighters, and the Gerli Oeste area, within the Lanús district, is within the jurisdiction of the Lanús Oeste Volunteer Firefighters.

The 6th Gerli Police Station is located at 1151 Carabelas street in Gerli Este, Tel. Echenagucía.

Lafuente 1269, where it worked between 1944 and 1971. When it was transferred that year to its current address at Carabelas 1151, it already had the rank of Sub-Commissioner, being promoted to Gerli 6th Police Station on October 1, 1986.

In Gerli Este, Lanús district, the Villa Angélica Police Detachment existed between 1913 and 1972, first in Bustamante and Lafayette, later in Nelson 2346 (today Periodista Prieto 346), being eradicated that year and leaving this area unprotected an area that, since then, depends on the 2nd Police Station of Lanús Este, more than two kilometers away.
