Georgetown university
Georgetown University, Georgetown University, is the oldest Catholic university in the United States. It belongs to the Society of Jesus, and is located in Georgetown, Washington D.C.. It is part of the Association of Jesuit Universities, which includes the 28 institutions that the Society of Jesus directs in the United States; and is together with the Catholic University of America and Trinity Washington University the Catholic universities of the District of Columbia.
Georgetown student organizations include the Philodemic Society, founded in 1830; one of the oldest debating societies in the nation and the Mask and Bauble Dramatic Society, the oldest college theater group.
History
The University was founded in 1789 by Father John Carroll, S.J., America's first Catholic bishop and Archbishop of Baltimore.
Degrees
Georgetown offers undergraduate and graduate (master's and doctoral) degrees. In addition to Georgetown College, there are four undergraduate schools and three graduate schools: the schools of nursing and health sciences, medicine, law, and continuing education; the Robert Emmett McDonough School of Business Administration, the Edmund A. Walsh School of International Studies, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
Today, the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service (international relations) is considered one of the best in the world in this area. His master's degree in foreign service (MSFS, Master of Science in Foreign Service) currently occupies first place in the international ranking (set annually by Foreign Policy magazine) of master's degrees in international relations.
Sports
Georgetown is a member of the Big East Sports Conference. In the 1980s, it had one of the best college basketball programs under John Thompson Jr., winning a title in 1984. The University produced several NBA stars like Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo and Allen Iverson. Patrick Ewing is the current coach of Georgetown.
