Reservoir, in geology, is a formation in which there is a statistically anomalous concentration of minerals (mineral deposits) present in the earth's crust or lithosphere.

A mining deposit is that deposit in which the quality and quantity of the minerals present justifies further study, which aims to define the quantity, quality, depth and dimension of the deposit in order to develop mining activities for that the exploitation of the deposit is economically profitable with current technologies.

Most naturally occurring chemical elements, even the less abundant ones, are found in the crust in considerable amounts. However, for them to be extractable, concentrations that only appear exceptionally are needed, in addition to adequate accessibility conditions. Some internal and external geological processes can locally produce economic concentrations of materials such as mineable metal, coal, or hydrocarbon ores.

A deposit is also called a formation of scientific interest, especially in the field of paleontology (paleontological site) when it contains fossilized remains of living beings.
