General Archive of the Nation of Peru
The General Archive of the Nation is a public executing agency attached to the Ministry of Culture of Peru. It is the governing body of the National Archives System and is in charge of preserving the Nation's Documentary Heritage. It is based in the city of Lima.
Functions
The General Archive of the Nation preserves and preserves the documentary – archival testimonies of the most important events that have taken place among Peruvians since the 19th century XVI.
History
It was created on May 15, 1861, in the government of Ramón Castilla y Marquesado, as the National Archive, with the aim of guarding historical government documentation, which until then was kept in the Convent of San Agustín in the Center of Lima. The National Archive was located in the old National Library.
In the 1940s, the National Archive was transferred to the Palace of Justice in Lima.
In 1972, the Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces changed the name to General Archive of the Nation.
