Garcia Sanchez II of Pamplona
García Sánchez II (d. c. 1000), nicknamed El Temblón, was the son of Sancho Garcés II Abarca and Queen Urraca Fernández and king of Nájera-Pamplona from 994 until his death.
Reign
He inherited the throne when his father, King Sancho Garcés II, died in 994. He tried to shake off the submission that his father had offered to Córdoba, for which, shortly after ascending the throne, he faced Almanzor, but in the year 996 he was forced to ask for peace in Córdoba.
Around 997, in an expedition of Pamploneses to the lands of Calatayud, the governor's brother was killed. Almanzor avenged this death by cutting off the heads of fifty Christians. Furthermore, the following year he took Pamplona and subdued the king from him.
In the battle of Cervera, in July of the year 1000, Count Sancho García of Castilla, Alfonso V of León, García Gómez de Saldaña and García Sánchez II joined forces, although there is no record that the king from Pamplona was in the battle.
He died around the year 1000, the date of his last appearance in documentation. After his death, there was an interregnum, managed by his first cousin Sancho Ramírez de Viguera, until in 1004 the eldest son of García Sánchez, Sancho Garcés III, then a minor, took the throne.
Marriage and offspring
He married Jimena Fernández, daughter of Fernando Bermúdez, Count of Cea, born of this marriage:
- Sancho Garcés III of Pamplona, born c. 990-92.
- Elvira Garcés, nun at the monastery of Leyre.
- García Garcés
- Urraca Garcés, queen of Leon for his marriage to King Alfonso V.
