Gao Xingjian (in Chinese, 高行健; pinyin, Gāo Xíngjiàn; Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, China, January 4, 1940) is a Chinese-language writer.

He is a playwright and novelist, and his most important work is the novel The Mountain of the Soul. He currently resides in France and is a French citizen. In 2000 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Biography

She studied French at the Beijing University of Foreign Studies. After graduating, he worked as a French translator in China.

His work reflects influences from modernism and the theater of the absurd. He was hired as a scriptwriter at the Beijing People's Arts Theater, where in 1982 his first play, The Alarm Signal, written in collaboration with Liu Huiyuan, was staged. His second play, The Bus Station, premiered in 1983, directed, like The Alarm Bell , by Lin Zhaohua. In the performance, this work followed a short piece by Lu Xun, whose protagonist ended up standing in line at a bus stop. Thus, the end of Lu Xun's work was linked to the beginning of The Bus Station. This work, the most famous of his compositions for his stage, bears certain similarities to Waiting for Godot , with a touch of Social Darwinism. Numerous local expressions are used in the play, with very Pekingese language, in the style of Lao She's famous play The Tea Room.

The “Campaign against Intellectual Pollution”, launched by the Chinese government in the mid-1980s, caused him problems with censorship, and the premiere of his third play, The Wild Man, was postponed until 1985. From 1986 the representation of his new works was prohibited.

In 1987 he traveled to Paris and stayed there. In France she finished his masterpiece, the novel The Mountain of the Soul (1990).

In 2000 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The news was met with outrage by the Chinese authorities, and the mainland Chinese media did not report on the awarding of the prize. The award of the Nobel Prize brought him world fame. His works began to be translated into Spanish and many other languages from that moment on.
