Gantz
Gantz (ガンツ< span class="t_nihongo_comma" style="display:none">, Gantsu ?) is a seinen manga created by Hiroya Oku in 2000. It combines action, science fiction, and personal relationships in contemporary Japan, where a group of people, which normally die in accidents, appear in an enigmatic apartment in which a large black sphere called Gantz is imposed. Shortly after their arrival and confusion, the sphere tells them that they have effectively died and they are forced to carry out the orders or missions that the being that lives within the sphere entrusts them, obtaining as a reward the preservation of their lives, if they survive the fulfillment of their duties. such orders.
In December 2006, its first period (1st stage) was closed with 20 volumes, and the second (2nd stage) in June 2009. The manga has been adapted to various formats such as video games, anime and ranobe. The manga returned with its 304th episode on October 1, 2009.
Due to its bloody content and nude scenes, it was censored in some countries.[citation needed]
Etymology
Gantz takes its name from the 1974 series Ganbare Robokon. This was about certain robots that carried out the orders of their master, the robot Gantz, every day. These orders consisted of helping people (the protagonist robot helped a certain family in particular), and each time they did so they were rewarded with points. The amount depended on the task. Upon completing 100 points, Gantz gave them a mechanical heart, and upon obtaining 10 hearts (1000 points spent) they were transformed into class A robots.
Argument
Kei Kurono is a selfish and apathetic student who is forced to save a person from being hit by a subway train because his childhood friend Masaru Kato calls him for help. As a result, he and Kato die in the attempt.
Later they appear in a visually normal apartment with other people just as bewildered as them. There, a mysterious black sphere forces them to participate in a sadistic game and to do so it puts at their disposal an entire exotic futuristic arsenal that they must learn to use to combat various species of aliens and other threats that go unnoticed by ordinary people.
Those who reach the room are not seen by mortal humans until the sphere "releases" them after each mission. Once they complete a mission they can take the equipment that is given to them (such as a weapon, a special suit...) to their home or wherever they go.
For each mission they are given a limited time and each time they return to the room, if they survive, they are awarded points depending on how they acted when facing the objective.
Main characters
- Kei Kurono (?)
- Seiyū: Daisuke Namikawa
A selfish and indolent student who is run over on the subway tracks along with an old childhood friend, Masaru Katō while trying to save a drunken homeless man. He is the central character of the story, and little by little he will discover the secrets that Gantz holds. At the beginning, he is shown as a selfish, meticulous, cowardly, perverted character who despises everyone; but during his appearances in Gantz's room, Kurono changes his way of being and evolves aggressively. Later, after the death of all his loved ones, he meets Tae Kojima, with whom he develops an emotional relationship, and makes him change his perspective towards the world, people and society.
- Masaru Katō (END?)
- Seiyū: Masashi Oosato
Kei-Kurono's childhood friend; whom he always admired. He is a humble person and always tries to help the weakest. Like Kei, he appears in Gantz's room after being hit by the subway. He lives with his younger brother Ayumu-Katō in the house of an aunt and his two cousins, because he and his brother were orphaned after the death of his parents; but because of the way his aunt treats them, he decides to live with his brother in another apartment for the two of them. His reason for living is his little brother, so he always tries to come back alive to be close to him.
- Kei Kishimoto (?)
- Seiyū: Hitomi Nabatame
She stands out physically for her beauty and huge breasts; She arrived at Gantz's room after attempting suicide in the bathtub, but she was saved by family members and taken to the hospital, causing a paradox. After surviving the first mission she discovers that the original of her did not die, turning her into a copy of her. Having nowhere to go, she decides to hold on to Kei Kurono for a while and asks to live with him. From the first moment Katō protects her from her, and although Kurono has feelings for her, and knows it, she prefers Katō.
Team
Before each mission the Gantz sphere opens offering a variety of objects and weapons so they can protect themselves and hunt the aliens. After the mission, they can be taken from the room for personal use.

---|---|---|
Name | Description | Other information |
I brought Gantz. ( 。 Gantsu Sūtsu?) | It is a personal armor that gives them the Gantz sphere before each mission. The costume material is built with an armoured compound, is smooth, and warm to the touch. The system function is ensured by the circulation of an organic fluid of a bright blue color. Interaction with muscles, nerves and vascular system is due to nano-fiber. The connection penetrates the skin, and grows in the major arteries and nerves, in this case, users notice a soft tickle or itching. The protection of the face and head is generated by the massive capsule complex at the back of the head. In case of complete exhaustion or overloading of systems, the armor is destroyed, in this case the capsules explode, a certain part of the nano-fiber, remains in the suit, but quickly breaks down. In passive mode the useful life of each capsule gradually decreases, so Gantz renews each team on each mission. Other features very much seen in the suit are that when receiving strong blows, bullet attacks or the same weapons delivered by Gantz among others, the suit protects the integrity of the individual, but on many occasions the capsules are destroyed by the magnitude of the damage received. It has also been seen that the suit is vulnerable to attacks by strong enemies using Katanas, acids, Lazers fireballs, among others, which makes the basic suit useless to extremely strong enemies.
In the mission, Osaka saga has seen the strongest member of the Osaka Hunters use what appears to be an improvement in the normal suit which seems to increase even more the strength and include an extremely powerful weapon and two huge knifes parallel to the arms that come out of the elbows of the suit. It has been seen from chapter 316 of the sleeve a new suit that at first sight triples the size of an average person, apparently these new suits have a special type of armament since conventional gantz weapons are very small for these suits. | It has three modes of operation:
|
Name | Description | Other information |
Gantz Radar | A device that allows us to locate the aliens and the Hunters, although not quite accurate. It can also be used to change the frequency of the body that uses it as a light receiver, making it invisible (as Nishi, Oka, Kurono, Isumi and the enemy who fights Kurono at the end of the anime). | The Vampires know those radars and to avoid them, use special contact lenses or optical lenses to see them. With him we can observe the time left to end the mission, except in the last missions, as the time limit has been removed. |
Arms | ||
Name | Description | Other information |
Pistol X (X Disarmament X?) | It is a basic energy weapon of Gantz participants, being light and compact. The mechanism of action is unknown, the molecules of the irradiated object begin to break down by exposure to a large amount of energy, after 5 seconds the reaction reaches the critical mass and the disintegration of the reached matter occurs.
This weapon can work in different ways, triggering triggers:
| |
Rifle X (X adversa crisis X Shotto Gan?) | It is an energy weapon, more powerful than Pistol X; a rifle built with the same principles. It has three additional emitters and an optical view that ensures a destructive effect greater than that of the gun and a range of approximately 1 km. The possibility of reaching such range partially offsets the delayed effect; although a larger size and weight decreases the effectiveness of the rifle in close combat. Like the gun, this gun has the same trigger system to ensure the tracking and fixing of the target. You can also fix more than one target at a time. | |
Pistol Y (And have fun And Gan?) | It is a weapon that is used only to capture the enemy, without causing any harm. Like the X, it has two triggers. By pressing the first, the target is set, by pressing both of them, the 3 cannons leave a network made of a synthetic fiber (in some cases) of high resistance, which entangles and fixes the target with a minichetes on the tips that fix it to the ground. The second trigger (only) teleports the target regardless of its size or weight, sends it to another plane outside this world. The fixing operates regardless of the size and strength of the target, the main, at least for a few seconds, to ensure immobility; then the Y-gun can be used to "destroy" the target, that is, teleport it to some unknown place. Generally this technique does not give many points for what has been seen during history | |
katana Gantz ( 。 Gantsu Sōdo?) | has the form of a katana and can be extended to an indetermined length. It is located along with the "Motocycle Gantz" in a continuous room to that of the Gantz dial. It appears for the first time during the Pueblerinense mission; apparently no one knew of the existence of these weapons until Izumi arrives with one of them at the entrance of the Prehistoric Museum. It is quite effective due to its little late use and its high effectiveness in court, however, it is like any sword: it can be destroyed. | |
Vehicles | ||
Name | Description | Other information |
Motorcycle Gantz (птотететь Gantsu Baiku?) | A type of motorcycle with a single wheel and the only vehicle that Gantz has for the moment. | It appears for the first time in the Extraterrestrial Campesino mission and is used by Kurono and Suzuki to distract dinosaurs. It appears for the second time in chapter 243 when two members of the Osaka Gantz team use them to attack the Nurarihyon. it can transport two people while walking. |
Special equipment: from 100 points. | ||
Name | Description | Other information |
Pistol z (H vomiting ♪?) | By pressing the triggers, a cylinder of "growth increased" is created, which crushes everything under it, leaving a hole on the ground. | From chapter 243, it is seen that the Osaka Gantz team carries long and powerful weapons that had never been seen before. In chapter 247, this weapon is used. We can see that the Tokyo team, seeing the effect of these weapons, deduces that possibly those are the Superarms that are won by getting the 100 points. This is confirmed when Nishi, who scored 100 points on the most recent mission, chooses option 2 and gets this weapon. The Osaka Gantzers are the ones who got the most and used this weapon. Izumi of the Tokyo team managed to exchange it but never used it as he died before the next mission |
Costume Gantz Special (∧ Tokushu Shiyō Gantsu Sūtsu?) | It's a bigger and more powerful suit than the ordinary. It has two blades on both sides, extremely large and long arms that reach the ground and some species of turbines that drive the arm at the time of beating, which gives it greater strength. Unlike the normal suit, it covers the entire body (including the face) which gives the user a humane robot appearance. | It is presumed to be obtained by getting about 500 or 600 points approximately. It was used by Oka Hachirou who reached up to 700 points and at least by an unknown team Gantzer on the mission of Italy. |
Super Armature Giant ( ра ン Kyodai Robotto?, Gantsu Mecha) | You don't know much about that weapon since it was barely used. It is known that it further increases the force of the user and is controlled by cables connected to the pulsations located in different parts of the special suit. | Only Oka Hachirou has been seen to use this powerful weapon against ushi oni, who destroyed part of it. From chapter 353 of the sleeve, you can see some huge robots that could be the same as those obtained by winning much more than 100* points, only much smaller. |
Hikō Yunitto?) | A modified and more effective version of the gantz motorcycle. Unlike your predecessor, this unit can fly which is of great help in case a giant enemy is confronted or needs to escape. | Used by Oka Hachirou who seemed to be an expert on the use of this one. |
Missions
During the entire development of the manga, the people who are sent to the room are in charge of eliminating different aliens and sending them to hyperspace with different weapons and special equipment.
Up to volume number 27 there are a total of ten missions, however, on September 17, 2010, volumes 28 and 29 were published, with eight chapters each.

The 100 points
When a person manages to obtain 100 points in Gantz, they can choose between three options:
1. Free yourself from Gantz and erase everything from memory.
2. Receive a more powerful weapon so that the following missions are not so difficult.
3. Revive someone who is in Gantz's memory.
- Notes on rewards:
(1) Your memory is erased, as if you didn't know Gantz, but time doesn't go back and you have blurry memories.
(2) Oka Hachirou's huge robot hints that there may be more options with a higher score. This robot is obtained in pieces: collecting 100 points and always asking for 'a more powerful weapon', on the second occasion they apparently give you one arm, the other on the third and so respectively the body, the helmet, etc. Someone is mentioned in history who reached 100 points more than 7 times.
(3) Gantz rather than revives, what he does is clone the subject from the last saved data of that person. Or if they were delivered, they died outside of Gantz and were later revived. Most barely remember the last mission they participated in. You can also clone someone who is alive, cases that occurred in the first and last seasons.
Adaptations
Anime
Created by the Gonzo studio and directed by Ichiro Itano, it has 26 episodes of approximately 20 minutes each; which follow the same plot as the manga until around volume eight. There is only one season that was divided into two due to problems with the television channel that decided to censor the first twelve episodes until they were only nine. For this reason, it is thought that there are two seasons since some time later the series was changed channels and continued its broadcast in its entirety from the point at which the pause was made. However, this conflict meant that Gantz's only season had two versions: the censored one and the uncensored one, the latter being the one that was later released on DVD.
The anime faithfully adjusts to the story of the manga (it even allows itself to fix some of the latter's contradictions, for example: at the beginning it is stated that ordinary humans cannot see aliens, however store clerks talk about how strange the Takanense is) but it adds new situations and original characters that at the beginning of the development of the story do not contribute much and slow down the plot, but serve to create an ending that the manga did not have at that time.
The anime adaptation launched mangaka Hiroya Oku to stardom, being recognized as an innovator in the seinen manga genre.
The Spanish dubbing for Latin America of Gantz was made in Venezuela by M&M Studios (former Estudios Lain) where it was premiered by the Animax television network, all episodes being broadcast without censorship.
Video game
In the video game, regardless of the way in which the opponent dies or the weapon you have used against him, Gantz distributes the points according to the total number of enemies killed and their difficulty,
After the battle against the Nurarihyon, it is implied that the point limit per monster is 100.
- Alienígena Cebolla.
- Alienygen Tanaka.
- Alienígena Salvaje and Alienígena Gruñon.
- Enano Alienygen.
- Vampires.
- Alienygen Gato Girl (Extra Mission).o
A game on this topic was released for the PS2 console, advancing the story a little more than in the anime series, and there are also fans who created another game.
