Fugazi was an American post hardcore band formed in 1987 in Washington D.C., known for their 'do it yourself' stance. 39; ('do it yourself'), his independent way of operating and his reluctance towards the music industry, an aspect that also extends to his record company, Dischord Records.

Fugazi has given many concerts around the world, produced six studio albums, a film ("Instrument") and a series, earning himself great recognition all over the planet. They played live until the end of 2002 but the band is officially inactive since 2003.

History

Ian MacKaye, respected musician part of pioneering and influential punk and hardcore bands like Teen Idles and Minor Threat, later formed another band called Embrace with a sound halfway between Minor Threat and Fugazi, different from the fast hardcore that characterized him. He later formed Fugazi, whose style is hard to pin down. His music, full of original expressions and experiments, mixes elements of dub/reggae with the energy of punk and hardcore. His style has often been called post-hardcore.

Fugazi formed in 1987, with drummer Brendan Canty, bassist Joe Lally, and guitarists and vocalists Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto (of Rites of Spring, considered the first emocore band), who had initially been in the top five. concerts as a guest before becoming a permanent member of the group. Musicians steeped in the punk movement from a very young age, they became known as Fugazi because of the way they work: five dollars per concert, no type of promotion through video clips, ten dollars per album; in short, creating a resistance to the general trend of the North American market and the American way of life. Fugazi was always known for his political position, they toured the world promoting a healthy lifestyle and criticizing corporations.

His original and energetic style was imitated by others: that current received the names Washington Sound or Dischord Sound (after the name of the record label that MacKaye runs).

Fugazi is now in a state of torpor. Ian MacKaye is following a side project called The Evens.
