Synopsis
Private Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) is transferred to Hawaii in 1941. His new captain (Philip Ober) knows that he is a good fighter and wants him to fight representing the company. However, Prewitt has given up boxing and refuses to participate because in a training session he hit his partner with such bad luck that it blinded him. The captain orders his subordinates to make life impossible for him, with the idea that he will change his mind. Meanwhile, Sergeant Warden (Burt Lancaster) begins seeing the captain's wife, Karen (Deborah Kerr), willing to enter into a relationship with another man due to problems in her marriage. During this relationship, the famous scene of Karen and Warden's bath on the beach takes place. Maggio (Frank Sinatra), Prewitt's friend, has a confrontation with one of the sergeants (Ernest Borgnine) - a cruel jailer who promises revenge if he is locked up. For the fight they impose a six-month punishment on him. There he is brutally treated by that sergeant but escapes and dies. Prewitt challenges the vengeful guardian to a knife fight to the death in an alleyway, where he kills him, though he too is somewhat seriously injured. Meanwhile, Prewitt had fallen in love with a club employee, Alma (Donna Reed), who hides him and takes care of her. Without anyone suspecting anything, the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. During it and due to the security measures imposed, Prewitt, who wants to join his unit despite being wounded, does not stop when ordered by a soldier and he is killed. The film ends with Karen and Alma on the ship that will take them to the continental United States.
