French Guiana national football team
The French Guiana national football team is the sports representative of this French overseas department. It is controlled by the Ligue de Football de la Guyane Française, which is an associate member of Concacaf, but does not belong to FIFA.
Having a status as a French overseas department, the local association of French Guiana is not associated with FIFA and therefore cannot participate in the Football World Cup. However, those born in Guyana, being full French citizens, can play in the French national football team, highlighting players such as Raoul Diagne, Bernard Lama (world champion in 1998) and Florent Malouda (world runner-up in 2006, although later played with the Franco-Guyanese national team). On the other hand, the Franco-Guyanese team can call players of the same origin but who had previously played with other major teams, as long as they are outside of Concacaf. This occurred with striker Gabriel Pigrée, who was a member of the Réunion team after spending several years in the Réunion league.
Due to its geographical location, French Guiana, as a South American territory, should be affiliated with Conmebol and not Concacaf. But like its peers from Guyana and Suriname, the sporting difference with the other South American teams led to it belonging to Concacaf.
History
French Guiana played its first international match against its neighbor Suriname (then Dutch Guiana) in 1936, a match that ended in a resounding 1-3 home defeat. He had to wait until the 1980s to compete in his first international tournament, the 1983 CFU Championship (which he organized), a competition where he placed 3rd.
With the advent of the Caribbean Cup in the 1990s, French Guiana qualified for the finals of the 1995 edition although they lost all three of their group stage matches and were quickly eliminated. Seventeen years later, they returned to play in the final phase during the 2012 edition. After a promising start that saw them defeat Jamaica (defending champions) 2-1, French Guiana could not repeat that performance, succumbing to Cuba (1 -2) and Martinique (1-3) being eliminated again in the first round.
In the 2014 Caribbean Cup the team had a very good performance in the tournament, managing to reach the final phase of the competition, where they managed to tie with Cuba, lost with Trinidad and Tobago and then achieved a 4:1 victory against Curacao managed to get third place and qualified for the first time in the playoffs for the 2015 Gold Cup against Honduras. In the first duel they managed to win 3:1 but unexpectedly lost in the second leg 3:0, Honduras managed to get the place with an aggregate score of 4:3.
In the 2016 Caribbean Cup the team would give its best historical participation. They started the tournament by beating Cuba 3:0 and losing 2:1 with Bermuda, passing just enough to the second round where they lost 2:1 with the Dominican Republic and in their second duel they faced Bermuda again, this time beating them 3:0 managing to reach the final phase of the Caribbean Cup again. Where in that round they beat Saint Kitts and Nevis 1:0 and then in the second match they were able to achieve a historic 5:2 victory against Haiti, thereby qualifying for the first time in their history to the Gold Cup of Concacaf.
In the 2017 Concacaf Gold Cup, French Guiana was placed in group A along with the teams from Canada, Costa Rica and Honduras. They began debuting on July 7, losing 4:2 against Canada and in their second match they managed to draw 0:0 with Honduras, but the match was declared won by Honduras with a score of 3:0 because French Guiana fielded the player. Frenchman Florent Malouda who did not meet the call-up requirements for the national team. And in their last duel they lost 3:0 with Costa Rica saying goodbye to the tournament definitively.
In 2019 they began their participation in the Concacaf Nations League, entering League B. After finishing second in their group, they competed in the 2021 Gold Cup qualifiers in 2021, where they ended up losing due to penalties in the final match against Trinidad and Tobago.
