Freedoms of several black stones.

In the game of go, a freedom is an empty intersection adjacent to a stone on the board. The number of liberties of a stone varies depending on its position on the board and whether or not it is in contact with another stone.

A stone initially has four liberties if it is not on the edge or with the liberties occupied by other stones of the opposing player.

You can extend the freedoms of a stone on the board by attaching it to another stone of the same color or to a group of stones of the same color.

And when it loses these liberties it is removed from the board and goes to the count of those captured by the opponent.
