The term free radio is a broad term that can refer to different types of radio stations, the only thing they would have in common is being independent associations without political-partisan interests, without commercial/profit purposes (what distinguishes them from pirate radios); this gives him freedom in his ideology. Free radio is in the classification of Alternative Media.

Advances in technology have allowed free radio to be broadcast over the Internet, achieving worldwide broadcasting.

They can be identified under the name of "free radios" situations as different as:
