The Ode to Platko, by Rafael Alberti

FC Barcelona 1928-1929

The poem Ode to Platko, by Rafael Alberti, has its origins in the first match of the 1928 Spanish Cup final between FC Barcelona and Real Sociedad de San Sebastian. Alberti narrated what he experienced in that game like this: “(...) A brutal game. (...) A football game was being played, but also nationalism. (...) Platko, a gigantic Hungarian goalkeeper, defended the Catalan goal like a bull. There were injuries, butts from the Civil Guard and races from the public. In a desperate moment, Platko was attacked so furiously by those from Real Sociedad that he was left senseless, bloodied, a few meters from his position, but with the ball in his arms (...) he appeared again, his head bandaged, strong and beautiful, determined to let himself be killed. (...)”. Later Alberti wrote the poem.

Ode to Platko

Real shirts,

Platko, distant Platko,
Blond Platko tronched,
fiery tiger in another country's lamb.
You, key, Platko, your key is broken,

aurea wrench fall before the golden porch (...)[]
