Franz beckenbauer
Franz Anton Albert Beckenbauer (Munich, West Germany, September 11, 1945), nicknamed The Kaiser, is a German former soccer player and manager. He currently serves as the honorary president of Bayern Munich. He is recognized as one of the best footballers of all time by winning two Ballon d'Ors, being the first defender to achieve this feat and the greatest in his position (defender) and in the history of his country.
Beckenbauer was a versatile player. Although he stood out as a midfielder, he adapted to different positions on the field of play, and is considered the great exponent of the libero defense position, unknown until his time.
As a player and with the Bayern Munich shirt, he won a European Cup Winners' Cup (1966/1967), three European Cups (1973/1974, 1974/1975 and 1975/1976) and an Intercontinental Cup (1976) at the continental level), while at the national level he won four Bundesligas (1969, 1972, 1973 and 1974) and four German Cups (1966, 1967, 1969 and 1971). He was the first player to win three European Cups as captain of his club.
He was capped 103 times for West Germany and played in three FIFA World Cups and two European Championships. He is one of three men, along with Brazilian Mário Zagallo and Frenchman Didier Deschamps, to have won the World Cup both as a player and as a coach; he lifted the World Cup trophy as captain in 1974 and repeated the feat as manager in 1990. he was the first captain to lift the World Cup and European Championship at international level and the European Cup at club level.
He has been awarded the European Ballon d'Or in 1972 and 1976. He occupies third place in the ranking of the Best Soccer Player of the 20th Century published by IFFHS in 2004 and second place in the ranking of the Best European Soccer Player of the 20th Century in 2004. In 2007 he was named by the IFFHS as "Universal Genius of World Soccer" (Top Player, Coach and Manager). He was named to the World Team of the 20th Century in 1998, to the FIFA World Cup Dream Team in 2002 and in 2004 he was included in the FIFA 100 World's Greatest Living Players.
After being a footballer, he became team manager and later president of Bayern Munich from 1994 to 2009 and became honorary president from 2009. After two seasons with the New York Cosmos, he was inducted into the Hall of US Soccer Fame. He was also Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the 2006 World Cup and Chairman of the Board of Directors of FC Bayern Munich AG. From 1998 to 2010 he was one of the Vice Presidents of the DFB Executive Committee and from 2007 to 2011 he was a member of the FIFA Executive Committees.
On December 14, 2020, he was included as a central defender in the historic Ballon d'Or Dream Team.
Biography
From a young age, he stood out in the TSV Munich 1860 team. FC Bayern Munich, the other team in the city that was then just a regular Bundesliga team, signed him at the age of 14. Beckenbauer made his league debut Germany in 1964 and stunned the world at the 1966 Soccer World Cup in England by scoring 4 goals for Germany, finishing in second place.
At this time, Bayern began to forge its legend and became the new world power at club level. A year after his mythical appearance in the 1970 Soccer World Cup in Mexico, in which he came to play a game with his arm in a sling, he became captain of the Nationalmannschaft . Germany was the protagonist of the best game of the tournament together with Italy, this game was called the "game of the century", they lost that game but ended up in third place beating Uruguay.
This is where the golden age of German football and Bayern Munich begins. In the Eurocup in 1972, he had a magical performance as leader of the German team, here he defeated the host Belgium in the semifinals by a resounding 2-1 and in the final defeating the Soviet Union by a resounding 3-0, being consigned to the team ideal of the cup in the libero position. After the Eurocup he achieved two trebles in the Bundesliga (1972-1974) and in the European Cup (1974-1976). The unstoppable German machine won the World Cup they hosted. The 1974 Soccer World Cup was impressive in the group stage. They achieved victories 1-0 over the Chilean team and 3-0 over a weak Australia that, although they fell 1-0 against Democratic Germany, was able to qualify as second in their group to the next phase. Already in the second phase, everything would become more difficult because they would have to face Sweden, Poland and Yugoslavia, whom they would manage to defeat Yugoslavia 2-0, Sweden 4-2 and a tight 1-0 against Poland that gave them the right to play the final against Johan Cruyff's A Clockwork Orange. In that final, the German team started losing, but thanks to Beckenbauer's leadership and Müller's goals, they managed to turn it around and were crowned champions with a 2-1 victory. During this period of glory he managed to win two Ballon d'Ors (1972 and 1976) for his renowned work with the German team and Bayern Munich. Finally, his sports career would come to an end in 1980 after receiving a severe blow to the kidneys that would force him to leave the playing field as a player and start his career as a coach.
When Beckenbauer returned to the national team in 1984, after retiring a year earlier, it was as technical director. Surprisingly, der Kaiser , who had no experience as a coach, led his team to the 1986 World Cup final in Mexico, although they lost in this match against Argentina.
In Italy, during the 1990 World Cup, Beckenbauer made his legend even bigger by becoming the second person in the world to win the World Cup as a player and as a coach (a fact that the Brazilian Mário Zagallo had achieved for the first time twenty years earlier, in 1970).
He also managed Olympique de Marseille in the 1990-91 season and Bayern Munich in two stages in 1994 and 1996 as interim until the appointment of the corresponding coaches, while he held his positions on the club's board of directors.
In 2009, he stepped down as president of German club Bayern Munich, leaving the position in the hands of former soccer player Uli Hoeneß. He is also the vice president of the DFB (Deutscher Fussball Bund or German Football Federation), in addition to being the main organizer of the 2006 World Cup, played in June and July in Germany, and in turn has been named "President of honor" of Bayern and "Honorary Member" of the German Football Association.
Doping
In 1977, during an interview for the German magazine Stern, Beckenbauer claimed to have used blood doping to improve his performance: «I have a particular method to keep myself at the highest level: the injection of my own blood. A few times a month my friend Manfred Köhnlechner draws blood from my arm and then injects it again into my buttock. This causes artificial inflammation, which raises the level of red and white blood cells, and the general performance of the body." In the year in which these statements were made, this type of behavior was not yet illegal in the field of sports. sport.
In 2013 a report was published proving the systematic doping of German athletes from the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1950s and 1960s. This report states that three unidentified footballers from the German national team Federal tested positive for ephedrine after the 1966 World Cup final. During a discussion on German public television channel ZDF, Beckenbauer stated that he had never taken anything without knowing what it was, although he later said that the medical team gave them injections of vitamins that I didn't know more details about.
