Frankeniaceae is a monogeneric family (genus Frankenia) with about 70 accepted species of herbaceous perennials and subshrubs, most of them halophytic. and typical of warm regions.

Description

The genus is characterized by opposite, small, ericoid, simple, and entire leaves. Hermaphroditic, actinomorphic flowers; Calyx with 4-7 teeth, partly welded; corolla with 4-7 petals, provided with a ligular appendage on the nail; anthers with a variable number of stamens, often 6 in 2 whorls, 3 + 3 or 2 + 4; superior unilocular ovary. Cymose inflorescences or isolated flowers. Fruit in a loculicidal capsule.

Taxonomy

The family was created, without description or iconography, as Frankeniées (Frankenieae) by Nicaise Augustin Desvaux and published in Dictionnaire raisonné de botanique, p. 188[1], 1817.
