Franc (currency)

The franc is a currency. The name is believed to derive from the Latin inscription francorum rex ("king of the Franks") on the first French coin, or from the French franc, which means "free".

It was the name of the old currencies of France and Belgium, countries where it lost its legal validity on January 1, 2002 with the entry into force of the single European currency (euro). The Swiss franc is the currency in force in Switzerland. The CFA franc is the currency in force in former French colonies in Africa and the CFP franc is the currency of the overseas communities of the French Republic in the Pacific Ocean, the latter issued by the Overseas Issuance Institute.
