The magazine is world famous for its lists, including its lists of the richest Americans (the Forbes 400) and its billionaire lists. The magazine's motto is "The Capitalist's Tool".

History

B. C. Forbes, a Hearst finance columnist, and his partner Walter Drey, the managing director of Magazine of Wall Street, founded Forbes magazine in 1917. Forbes put the capital and the name and Drey the journalistic experience. The original name of the magazine was Forbes: Dedicated to People Who Do and What They Do. Drey became vice president of the company, while B.C. Forbes became editor-in-chief, a position he held until his death in 1954. B.C. Forbes was helped, in the last years of his life, by his two eldest sons, Bruce Charles Forbes (1916-1964) and Malcolm Stevenson Forbes (1917-1990).

Bruce Forbes took over the magazine after his father's death, and his forte was streamlining operations and business development. During his tenure, 1954-1964, the magazine's circulation doubled. However, investors and the confidence they placed in the magazine have a lot to do with the increase in circulation.

When Malcolm Forbes took over, he was not in charge of operations but he did provide two strategic initiatives that changed Forbes forever. He instituted a task force at home, rather than using freelance journalists, and published the first list article, for which Forbes became famous.

On Malcolm's death, his eldest son Malcolm Stevenson “Steve” Forbes Jr. (1947-) became President, and editor-in-chief of the magazine. Between 1961 and 1999 the magazine was edited by James Michaels. In 1993, under Michaels' leadership, Forbes was a finalist for the National Magazine Award. In 2006, a group of investors Elevation Partners (including rock star Bono) bought a minority interest in the company. The New York Times, in 2009 announced that 40% of the company was sold for 300 million dollars, putting the value of the company at 750 million dollars.

Conflict with Fidel Castro

In 2005, Forbes ranked Fidel Castro among the richest people in the world, with an estimated net worth of $550 million. In the 2006 article 'Fortunes of Kings, Queens and Dictators', Forbes increased his estimated wealth to $900 million. This article estimates the value of heads of government, "it is more an art than a science" and points out that in the case of Castro, the authors used a cash flow method counting several state companies and assuming that a portion of the profit was received by Castro. Castro responded that he had a net worth of less than a dollar and challenged anyone to prove that he has money in accounts in foreign countries.
