History
The Federation Nationale d'Achats ('National Federation of Purchasing') was a small club in Paris that sold photographic material at a reasonable price. It was established in October 1954 by Max Théret (1913-2009) and André Essel (1918-2005), who wanted to capitalize on their love of photography. In 1966 they expanded their business to non-members, opening the first public store. From then on, records, televisions, radios, etc. would be added. and it would be renamed Fédération Nationale d'Achats des Cadres, that is, sale of products for people in executive positions of companies.
After the first Fnac at 4 boulevard de Sébastopol, came the second at 17 avenue de Wagram in 1969. By 1970, the main shareholders were Paribas and UAP. Between that year and 1983, Louis Kaluszyner was general director of Fnac. Fnac's expansion outside of Paris began in 1972 with the opening of the first store in Lyon. Two years later they started selling books. In 1980, FNAC went public and began its expansion outside of France.
In 1994 it was bought by the conglomerate of companies PPR (now Kering), which includes luxury brands such as Balenciaga, Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent.
International expansion
The establishment of Fnac outside of France, specifically in Belgium, began in 1981 with the opening of the Brussels store. The same year, Max Théret left Fnac. Two years later, André Essel was replaced at the helm of Fnac by Roger Kerinec.

Callao Building
Contrary to what it may seem, Fnac does not occupy the entire building, since part of it is reserved as offices that have been occupied by insurers such as Reale and official organizations. Access to the office area is through the door that leads to the Plaza del Callao.
Next to the dome, after the reform of the building, several images were placed, among which a giant King Kong doll stood out. It had to be removed by order of the Madrid City Council as it affected the stability of the building.
Fnac Services
Fnac specializes in electronics, books, music and video games, although it also has additional services such as a cafeteria or a newsstand. It allows customers to browse the books freely: seats have even been set up for this in the children's area.
On the other hand, a membership program is also available by card or card, with discounts on some items and product financing. It also provides benefits at third-party companies, such as Cinesa chain cinemas.
Since the inauguration of its first headquarters in Madrid, Fnac reserves a space in several of its buildings that it calls the Forum, where literary events, workshops, concerts, talks and audiovisual projections are held, among others.
