The song "Flower of Scotland" is one of Scotland's unofficial anthems. As such, it is sung at those sporting events in which soccer or rugby teams participate; and at others, such as the Commonwealth Games, "Brave Scotland" is used as the Scottish anthem.

The song was composed in the mid-1960s by Roy Williamson of the folk group The Corries. It was first heard publicly on a 1967 BBC television series. The lyrics refer to the victory of the Scots, led by Robert I, over Edward II of England at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Although there is no Scotland's official national anthem, "Flower of Scotland" is one of a number of songs used, along with the older "Scotland the Brave".

The song was composed and sung in English, with Scottish pronunciation of some words (eg, "Tae" instead of "To").

History

This song is a particular favorite among supporters of the Scotland rugby union team, who adopted it during their Lions tour in South Africa in 1974. The last two verses of each verse are sung by the players with particular anger, especially when they face the England team. The Scottish Football Association also adopted "Flower of Scotland" as its official anthem in 1997, although it had been using it since 1993, following the example of the Rugby team. However, at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Scottish athletes voted to use "Flower of Scotland" as their anthem.

Normally only the first and third verses are sung, although Unionist singer Donnie Munro refused to sing the third, opting instead to use the second verse.[citation needed]

Letter

Flower of Scotland, in Spanish.

Oh, flower of Scotland,
when we'll see
other equals again,
who fought and died for
Your little piece of hill and cane,
and resisted him,
the army of the proud Eduardo,
and sent him home,
to think about it again.

The hills are naked now,
and autumn leaves
They're so stupid and immobile,
on the land now lost,
that those with so much sacrifice defended,
and resisted him,
the army of the proud Eduardo,
and sent him home,
to think about it again.

Those days are past now,
and in the past
must remain,
But we can still get up,
and be the nation again,
who resisted him,
the army of the proud Eduardo,
and sent him home,
to think about it again.

Oh, flower of Scotland,
when we'll see
other equals again,
who fought and died for
Your little piece of hill and cane,
and resisted him,
the army of the proud Eduardo,
and sent him home,
to think about it again.

Flower of Scotland, original in English.

Or Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
Your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit hill and glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

The Hills are bare now,
And Autumn leaves
Lie thick and still,
O'er land that is lost now,
Which those so dearly held,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

Those days are past now,
And in the past
They must remain,
But we can still rise now,
And be the nation again,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

Or Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
Your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit hill and glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

Gaelic Lyrics

AM FLUTR NA H-ALBA

O Fhlùir na h-Alba,
Cuin a chì sinn
a seòrsa laoich
a sheas gu bàs 'son
am bileag feòir is fraoich,
a sheas an aghaidh
feachd uailleil Iomhair
's a ruaig e dhachaidh
air chaochladh smaoin?

Na cnuic tha lomnochd
's tha duilleach Foghair
sea bhrat air làr,
am fearann caillte
give tug na seòid ud gràdh,
a sheas an aghaidh
feachd uailleil Iomhair
's a ruaig e dhachaigh
air chaochladh smaoin.

Tha 'n eachdraidh dùinte
ach air dìochuimhne
chan fheum i bhith,
is faodaidh sinn èirigh
gu bhith nar Rìoghachd a-rìs
a sheas an aghaidh
feachd uailleil Iomhair
's a ruaig e dhachaidh
air chaochladh smaoin.

O Fhlùir na h-Alba,
Cuin a chì sinn
a seòrsa laoich
a sheas gu bàs 'son
am bileag feòir is fraoich,
a sheas an aghaidh
feachd uailleil Iomhair
's a ruaig e dhachaidh
air chaochladh smaoin?

Scots Lyrics

Or Flouer or Scotland,
Whan will we see
Your like again,
That focht and dee'd for,
Your wee bit Hill an Glen,
An stuid agin him,
Prood Edward's Airmy,
An sent him hamewart,
Tae think again.

The Hills is bare nou,
An Autumn leafs
Lies thick an still,
Ower land that is lost nou,
That thae sae dearly held,
That stuid agin him,
Prood Edward's Airmy,
An sent him hamewart,
Tae think again.

Thir days is past nou,
An in the past
They maun remain,
But we can aye rise nou,
An be the nation again,
That stuid agin him,
Prood Edward's Airmy,
An sent him hamewart,
Tae think again.

Or Flouer or Scotland,
Whan will we see
Your like again,
That focht an dee'd for,
Your wee bit Hill an Glen,
An stuid agin him,
Prood Edward's Airmy,
An sent him hamewart,
Tae think again.
