Florida de Liébana is a Spanish municipality and town in the province of Salamanca, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León. It is integrated within the region of Campo de Salamanca (Campo Charro). It belongs to the judicial district of Salamanca.

Its municipal area is made up of the towns of Florida de Liébana, La Florida Extrarradio, Puerto de la Anunciación and Villaselva, it occupies a total area of 20.79 km² and according to demographic data collected by the INE in 2017, It has a population of 267 inhabitants.

History

Its foundation dates back to the repopulation carried out by the kings of León in the Middle Ages, being integrated into the bathroom of the jurisdiction of Salamanca, within the Kingdom of León, then called Muelas. Later it was known as Florida and, from 1641, as "Florida de Liébana". With the creation of the current provinces in 1833, Florida de Liébana was included in the province of Salamanca, within the Leonese Region.

Geography

The municipal area extends along the banks of the Tormes River. The land has a mixed character between a pasture area (oaks and low scrub with rainfed crops, basically cereal) and an irrigated area -riverbank- (corn and sugar beet crops). It has a stream that flows three kilometers from the town center (Villaselva stream) and which maintains its course throughout the year. The oldest data confirms the existence of a church in the 12th century in "lo alto del teso, next to the eras", a space where the remains of the town church (17th century- XIX) and the cemetery. Formerly this town was known as "Muelas" and came to have 570 inhabitants around 1950. Traditionally its inhabitants supplied Salamanca with fruit and vegetables.

The municipality, which has an area of 20.79 km², has 267 inhabitants and a density of 12.84 inhabitants/km² according to the municipal register for 2017 of the INE.
