The district of Florencia de Mora is one of the eleven that make up the province of Trujillo, located in the department of La Libertad, in the North of Peru. It borders the districts of El Porvenir, La Esperanza and Trujillo.

Name

The name given to this district is a tribute to the philanthropist and encomendera Florencia de Mora Pizarro, niece of the conqueror Francisco Pizarro, who lived in the city of Trujillo during the first years of the conquest. Her religious works and her help to the indigenous people with the donation of land made her known as "The Orchid of America."

History

This district was created on September 23, 1985, during the first government of Alan García Pérez. Previously it was part of the El Porvenir district.

Geography

It is constituted as a single population center, which is also part of the city of Trujillo, it is located approximately 4 kilometers north of the historic center of Trujillo.

It covers an area of 1.99 km² and is at a height of 40 meters above sea level and 6 km from the Pacific Ocean.

Administrative division

Territorially it is organized into twelve moderately consolidated neighborhoods, with basic levels of communal facilities and 95% coverage in drinking water, sewerage and 95% electrification.

Population

According to the 2007 census, a population of 21,150 inhabitants was counted and according to INEI projections, the year 2014 has an estimated population of 22,104 inhabitants.

It has more than 40 sectors. At the beginning of its origins, the portion was smaller due to the small number of inhabitants of the town, which has increased over time.

The district is going through multiple social problems, the most predominant being crime and urban expansion.

Urban landmarks

The characteristic land use of the district is residential, which is complemented by productive activities, giving rise to mixed uses of housing, commerce and workshop housing. Generally, Trujillo people divide the district into two sections: Lower part and Upper part. Currently the main avenue of the lower part of this district is Avenida 26 de Marzo.

The main economic activities carried out by the population are located in the tertiary sector (informal commerce and others), with the growing presence of micro companies producing footwear, furniture, metal mechanics, among others, being significant.
