The national flag of the Maldives was adopted on July 25, 1963. It is a green cloth containing a white crescent (crescent moon) with a red border. Its dimensions are 2:3.

The color green and the crescent are traditional symbols of Islam. The red border, the color of blood, represents those who have died defending the nation.

The former royal flags of the Maldives were red with a narrow strip of black and white diagonal bands along the pole.
