Fish flour

Fishmeal is a product obtained from processing fish, eliminating its water and oil content. Fish oil is an important by-product.

With 70% to 80% of the product in the form of protein and digestible fat, its energy content is remarkably higher than many other animal or vegetable proteins as it provides a concentrated source of high-quality protein and a fat rich in omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA essential for the rapid growth of animals. Its main producers in the world are Peru and Chile.

Uses

As an ingredient in feed for poultry, laying birds, pigs, ruminants, dairy cows, cattle, sheep, and aquatic animals (shrimp, fish, and others), significantly reducing the industrial production costs of these animals due to their rapid growth, better nutrition, improved fertility and a notorious decrease in the chances of diseases.[citation required]

Requirements

According to studies carried out by the International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organization (IFFO), it is estimated that by 2013 the requirements for fishmeal would rise by 4 million metric tons due to the variety of applications of this product marine industry.

Your use may be limited by availability or cost.

Main markets

The main consumer markets are the People's Republic of China and the European Union, although exports are made to more than fifty countries by the two most important world producers, contributing seventy percent of the supply of fishmeal to global level. In China, fishmeal is used mainly for aquaculture.

In 2003, Chile and Peru jointly filed their protest before the World Trade Organization (WTO), for the import restrictions that, for protectionist purposes, the European Union intended to definitively implement.

Precautions

Fishmeal can present spontaneous combustion, therefore the necessary precautions must be taken to prevent this phenomenon when it is stored or transported. Such precautions extend but are not limited to ventilation, physical layout, and control of temperature changes.
