Final Fantasy X (ファイナルファンタジーX, Fainaru Fantajī ten?) is an RPG developed and published by the company Squaresoft (now known as Square Enix after the 2003 merger with Enix) for the PlayStation 2 system, arriving in Europe in 2002; is the tenth installment in the Final Fantasy series, and was the first to be developed for this game console.

Introduced in 2001, it is among the 20 best-selling console video games in history; It has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, making it the second best-selling game in the series. It was also voted by the readers of the Japanese video game magazine Famitsu as the best video game of all time.

In the Final Fantasy series, this game marks an important transition from fully pre-rendered settings to full 3D environments thanks to the PlayStation 2's Emotion Engine processor. some interiors and specific settings continue to use the pre-rendered models. Final Fantasy X is the first in the series to feature a wide range of realistic facial expressions, as well as other technological achievements, such as varying lighting and shadows between the different parts of a character's clothing. It was also the first installment in the series to incorporate voices in the characters' dialogues, dubbed by professional actors, and it is also the first to have a sequel, Final Fantasy X-2.

During the 2011 Tokyo Game Show, Sony announced that a high-definition port of the game would be made for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, which eventually shipped in Japan in December 2013, while in North America and Europe came out in March 2014. In May 2015 the high-definition version was also distributed for PlayStation 4 and a year later, in May 2016, for PC. All versions include a high-definition adaptation of Final Fantasy X-2.

Plot

"Listen to my story, this might be our last chance" ("Listen to my story, this could be our last chance")

-Tidus, at the beginning of the game.

Tidus is a young blitzball star who plays for the Zanarkand Abes (his hometown team). One day, during a match, a strange being called Sinh suddenly attacks the city. Auron, a mysterious family acquaintance of Tidus, helps him escape by entering the sphere that had caused the devastation. Tidus wakes up in a place unknown to him. Tired and hungry he seeks refuge inside some ruins, where he is attacked by a wild beast. In the heat of battle, he is aided by a mysterious girl named Rikku, who appears out of the blue. She takes him and feeds him. She then explains to him that Zanarkand was destroyed 1000 years ago and that everything Tidus seems to know, believe or know lacks logic.

And this is where the adventure really begins. Playing Tidus we will have to discover what has happened to us and how we can return to Zanarkand, our home. To do this we must discover the relationship between our trip and Sinh. We will meet many characters in an intricate story that will reveal the truth behind Sinh and the world of Tidus, which seems to exist in another time. Among these characters we will meet Yuna, who together with Tidus will embark on a great adventure to free Spira from Sinh and return the young man to his own time.

The protagonists of the tenth part of the eternal story of love, hate, magic and fantasy from Squaresoft are the most charismatic of the latest games in the saga. The different motivations of each make the personalities of the main characters clearly distinguishable, adding a spontaneous component to the plot that is welcome in a game whose linearity could make the script very predictable.

Characters

  • Tidus: The happy boy is the ace of the Zanarkand Abes, a team of blitzball. For a long time he hates his father, since when he disappeared from Zanarkand, like Tidus, his mother lost the desire to live and died. He was a very famous player before he disappeared and did not return home, leaving his mother and him without notice. Tidus' rapid movements allow him to face with guarantees all kinds of enemies. His name, like Yuna, comes from the Okinawense dialect (Japanese originator). It is read as it is written and means "Sol", as Nomura always places his characters names related to the sky (Sora, Cloud, Squall, etc.).
  • And a: Daughter of the Great Braska Invocator. Honest and very determined. Yuna embarks on a pilgrimage in the quest for the Supreme Eon, which will use to defeat Sinh. Yuna is an apprehension of Eons and white magic. Its name means "Night" in Okinawense, which is where the name of Tidus comes from as well.
  • Wakka: Coach and captain of the Blitzball team of his hometown, the Besaid Aurochs. Wakka plans to retire from the sport after this year’s tournament so that she can dedicate herself fully to protecting Yuna as a guardian. His Blitzball ball launches are especially effective against flying enemies. Wakka is a man of firm religious beliefs and strong prejudices, but the journey all over the planet will forever change its existence.
  • Lulu: One of the guardians of Yuna. She and Wakka see her as a little sister. He is a specialist in black magic, and uses different dolls to be able to perform powerful spells. He couldn't stop him from dying an invocator before Yuna on the plain of Calm, and this torments her. Lulu is very wise and knows almost all of Spira's history.
  • Kimahri Ronso: Mighty warrior of the Ronso race. Kimahri has taken care of Yuna since this was very small, at the request of Auron. He speaks very little, but his devotion to the invocator has no limits. Kimahri can learn the attacks of his enemies thanks to his ability Ronso Rage (in the Spanish version called "Alma de Dragon").
  • Auron: Legendary Guardian who, together with Jecht and the Great Invocator Braska, defeated Sinh ten years ago. A man of few words, he is dedicated to guiding Yuna and Tidus in his mission of defeating Sinh once again. When he balances his powerful katana even his most fearsome adversaries begin to shake. He is the most powerful samurai, meticulous and very wise, fulfills the promise made by Braska and Jecht to take care of their children, Yuna and Tidus, after their deaths. After discovering that Yunalesca betrayed Braska and Jecht, Auron wanted to avenge the death of his friends. However, Yunalesca defeats him and soon dies in Bevelle, after having met Kimahri, whom he asks to take care of Yuna. Then, as a wandering soul, he travels in Sinh to return to the Zanarkand for a thousand years and thus take care of Tidus.
  • Rikku: A young Albhed extroverted, sincere and very optimistic. He works hard to get his people back the glory they had one day. Rikku is a thief or alchemist especially useful in fighting against mechanized enemies, and his ability to steal items is not negligible either. She is also the daughter of Cid (the leader of the Albhed) and the cousin of Yuna.
  • Sinh: The story of Sinh goes back to the War of Machines between the two capitals of Spira in ancient times. Zanarkand was the city of magic and invocators. Bevelle, on the contrary, was the center of Spira. At that time there was no predominant religious belief in Spira.

Without warning, a war broke out between these two cities. Yu Yevon, the greatest of summoners, was the leader of the people of Zanarkand and loved his city above all else. Zanarkand had hundreds of elite summoners, wizards, and warriors. Bevelle's weapons were mostly machines, created to kill large masses of people. The battle took place in what is now known as the Plain of Calm. Bevelle won this battle and continued advancing towards Mount Gagazet to definitively destroy the city of Zanarkand, where only civilians and some summoners remained.

Yu Yevon, the father of Yunalesca (from whom Yuna is named), still remained in the city and was the only thing Bevelle feared at the moment. Faced with the terrible massacre that he was experiencing on his people, he gathered all the summoners of Zanarkand and turned them into orators to create the greatest summon ever seen: Sinh. Thus, he would plunge Spira and its capital into an infinitely spinning death spiral, centered on Sinh. And within it the people of Zanarkand would last forever.

He gathered all his power by giving his soul in exchange, and Sinh was finally summoned. Bevelle's troops, upon reaching the top of Mount Gagazet, heard a voice coming from the city of Zanarkand. It was a melody that came from the lips of Yu Yevon himself, who, inside Sinh, kept on invoking. Thus the Yevon Psalm was born. By the time Bevelle's soldiers saw the ruins of Zanarkand, the war was over and the reward was Sinh. Faced with this panic, Bevelle said that all the fault lay with Yevon, the ruler of Zanarkand, and banned the Psalm in all of Spira. Despite everything, some supporters of Zanarkand, such as the Albhed, began to sing it in defiance.

But not everyone died in Zanarkand, nor did their revenge end here. Yunalesca, daughter of Yu Yevon, would be in charge of granting the Supreme Invocation that would defeat Sinh. This would be delivered to those summoners who reached the ruins of Zanarkand demonstrating its great value, in exchange for the life of its guardian, who would become a speaker. Thus both could face Sinh and destroy his armor, in exchange for dying in the fight. Later, Yu Yevon would seize the Supreme Invocation, to forge a new shell and be able to reappear as a new Sinh. Finally, and to close the circle of death of Spira, Yevon's beliefs spread that, warning that Sinh was born from the sins of humanity and spread through temples all over the planet, he would plunge the inhabitants of Spira into a nightmare. endless.

But this master move by Yu Yevon and Yunalesca would last until a thousand years later when Auron, guardian of Braska (Yuna's father), does not become a speaker, since it is Jecht (Tidus's father) who decides to do so. In this way he is able to survive to tell the terrifying secret that is hidden under the emblems of Yevon. Thus, he will travel through time to bring from the dream Zanarkand who lives in Sinh a boy who will change the destiny of Spira forever: Tidus.

Side Characters

  • Seymour Guado: Seymour is the son of a human invocator and a glove. He was the leader of the breed of the guado and his great ambition has always been power. Her mother was the speaker of Anima, a dark Eon, and she sacrificed herself to be able to give such an invocation to her son. It's playable, but only for a battle, and it has all the skills to the maximum.
  • Braska: Father of Yuna, considered a legendary invocator for returning calm to the world of Spira ten years ago the events taking place in the game. He had as a guardian Jecht and Auron, who later became the guardian of Yuna.
  • Jecht: Father of Tidus, considered legendary guardian for returning calm to the world of Spira together with Braska and Auron. Also considered the best blitzball player of Spira. Jecht was part of Zanarkand's dream until he accidentally falls into Spira, knows Braska and gets involved in his journey. Finally he agrees to be his speaker, saving Auron's life and thus breaking Spira's death spiral.
  • Yunalesca: She was the daughter of the powerful invocator Yu-Yevon, creator of Sinh in the war between Zanarkand and Bevelle. After his father created Sinh, Yunalesca fought against him and was the first high summoner to defeat him. To do this he invoked the supreme eon. He died in that battle with Sinh and her husband and guardian Zaon. His spirit dwells during the game in the temple of Zanarkand. There waits for the invocators who, like her, want to defeat Sinh, over and over. His mission is that of, in order to invoke the supreme aeon, to choose which guardian of those who accompany the invocator will become such a being. In this way, the guardian itself, will become the reborn Sinh.
  • Cid: Father of Rikku and uncle of Yuna, is the leader of the Al Bhed and owner of the ship on which he travels during the game.
  • Luzzu and Gatta: They are two spira legionaries stationed in Besaid. Before the Mi'ihen operation, depending on what the player tells Gatta, either of you can die. Later on in the flying boat if the player travels to Besaid you will be able to see one of the two (the one who survived) training a legionary group.
  • Venerable: They are the spiritual leaders of Spira. Among the best known are:
  • Kelk Ronso: One venerable Ronso, and leader of these.
  • Jyscal Guado: One venerable glove and leader of Guadosalam.
  • Wen Kinoc: Human and leader of Yevon soldiers
  • I Mika: He was the most important venerable of all: the supreme venerable.

It should be noted that the first three were killed by Seymour Guado.

  • Monjes Guerreros: They are Yevon's navy, and they also protect the venerable. Your leader is Wen Kinoc.

Aeons

Main article: Yuna

In this game the summons are called Aeons. There are a total of 8, but 3 of them are secret.

  • Valefor: It is the first Eon that Yuna gets, becoming an invocator. He was awarded by Besaid. It's not elementary. It's shaped like a bird. It has two turbo techniques that cause great harm not elemental to all enemies: Devastator Ray and Death Rain.
  • Ifrit: It's the second. Ifrit has already appeared in other Final Fantasy sagas. Use the fire to attack. It is achieved during the game, in the temple of Kílika. His turbo "Infernal Fire" causes great damage of element fire to all enemies.
  • Ixion: It is the third Eon and uses the element of lightning. It has a form of unicorn. Ixion lives in the temple of Djose. His turbo "Final Electrocution" causes great damage of lightning element to all enemies.
  • Shiva: It is the fourth Eon, uses the ice element and has a woman's shape. Like Ifrit has already appeared in other Final Fantasy sagas. You'll get it in the temple of Macalania. Your "Polvo de Diamantes" turbo causes ice damage to all enemies.
  • Bahamut: The fifth and last Eon you get in the normal course of the game. It's not elementary, but it's very powerful. It resembles a great monster with wings. Got it in Bevelle. Your turbo Mega Fulgor causes non-elementary damage greater than 9.999 points to all enemies.
  • Yojimbo: Unlike the other eons, Yojimbo only attacks if he is paid, although he can do it by his own will without you having to. Daigoro, Tres Dagas, Katana and Ultraesgrima are their four techniques. The Yojimbo Ultrasgrim Attack, is the strongest of the whole game, capable of eliminating any enemy (without any exception) from a single blow.
  • Anima: It is one of the most powerful eons. His Dolor attack causes death to an enemy or a very powerful non-elemental damage. Your turbo Released causes damage to all enemies (die consecutive attacks on each, every blow up to 99,999).
  • Sisters Magus (from Final Fantasy IV): There are three characters who behave angryly. You must ask them to attack with commands like "Dale Hard" or "Unir Forces". Your turbo attack is Delta Attackwhich causes non-elementary damage. Six strokes up to 99,999 points.

Dark Aeons

The temples and monks will consider Yuna a traitor to Yevon after she escapes from Bevelle. Only in the PAL version, in certain places in Spira, the dark aeons will appear, which are much stronger versions of yours. It is optional to fight them, but if you defeat them all, a video will appear showing a creature emerging from the ravine of the Plain of Calm, the Final Executioner, considered the most difficult boss of all Final Fantasy. It should be added that you will also have to face some black aeon if you want to get an important object. For example, to get the second boost from Valefor, Rain of Death, and the Jecht Sphere next to Besaid Temple, you'll need to defeat Dark Valefor. Here is the location of the black eons.

  • Valefor Oscuro: At the entrance to the village of Besaid. An animation when entering, and the temple monk will throw you into Valefor.
  • Ifrit Oscuro: In the Sanubia Desert. At the entrance of the ruins of the albhed home, a girl will tell you she's lost her daughter. Accept to help her and unleash the battle against her "son," Ifrit.
  • Ixion Dark: In the Plain of the Rays. Beyond the House of Rhine, there will be a soldier in a parable. Talk to him and Ixion Dark will come for you. You'll have to beat him twice. You can fight him before you fight Yunalesca.
  • Shiva Dark: At the entrance of the Temple of Macalania. Go through all the parade and at the entrance of the temple the Guado will send you to Shiva. You can fight her before you fight Yunalesca.
  • Dark Bahamut: In the battle place of Yunalesca. When he comes in, Dark Bahamut will throw for you.
  • Yojimbo Oscuro: In the Cueva del Orador Robado. Advance at the end of the cave and walk back to the entrance. After taking a few steps away from the end conveyor, a scene will show you as a monk calls Yojimbo Dark. You'll have to beat Yojimbo five consecutive times. You can fight him before you fight Yunalesca. It's perhaps the hardest to beat all the Dark Eons.
  • Dark: On Mount Gagazet. Repeat the Wakka test and the ball. When doing well, Ánima will appear at the entrance of Mount Gagazet. It is the Dark Eon with more vitality. You can fight against Dark America before fighting Yunalesca.
  • Sisters Magus Oscuras: On the Trail of the Hongo Rocks. Access there through the Miihen Road. As you move forward a little, an animation will show you two callers calling Sandy and Mindy.

Tip: To more easily defeat the Dark Magus Sisters, there is one option: kill them one by one. To do this, you must flee to the left and go up to the elevator. You will activate a minigame that consists of going through the entire path to the elevator without any summoner reaching you. As you progress, the summoners will tire and only two will remain, and eventually one. Then you approach the one that is closest to her, and start the fight with her only. It's easier with Yojimbo's Ultra Fencing.

  • After defeating all, the Final Verdugo will rise. To confront him, you must choose as a destination in the Flying Boat "Finth Verduke". After an animation the battle will begin, which will be very long since the Verdugo has 12,000.000 points of VIT.

Races

Humans

They are the largest population of Spira. Each one has its characteristics and its combat mode as well as its character.

We distinguish seven types:

  • High Callers: Those who have finished their pilgrimage have obtained the highest eon and defeated Sinh. And one, by defeating Sinh, became the last High Invocative and the first to defeat him without invoking the supreme eon.
  • Invocators: In charge of defeating Sinh with the help of the eons obtained in the temples through his pilgrimage to Zanarkand, and the supreme eon, obtained in that city.
  • Guardians: They protect the invocators and always go with them. Each caller chooses his guardians.
  • Monks/as: In charge of the temples and to spread the message of Yevon throughout Spira.
  • Venerable: They have the power. They're the ones who rule over all in Bevelle and all Yevon's followers. The venerable do not necessarily have to be human, they may also belong to this group members of the other races. The last 4 venerable are Mica, Seymour Guado, Kinoc and Kelk Ronso.
  • Monjes warriors: Monks responsible for protecting civilians and venerable. They can go armed with a rifle or flamethrowers and have the help of attack machines allowed by the clergy.
    • Redividive monks: Ancient monks of Zanarkand who are dead in life, that is, they have returned after death but do not present any trace of humanity. They're in a zombie state, so they're affected by healing magic.
  • Speakers: Speakers are responsible for granting power to eons (invocations). Their souls live in large rocks that are usually found in the temples of Yevon.
  • Civil: All the others.

Albhed

A race with a human appearance but with its own language and some distinctive features. They use the machines for everything unlike the rest of the inhabitants of Spira, because they do not believe in Yevon and his doctrine. They have spiral-shaped pupils. Their home was destroyed by the Sinh and they lived on the island of Bikanel until it was destroyed by the Guado. His blitzball team is the Alhbed Psyches.

They have a very quirky language of their own which can be learned by collecting Albhed dictionaries scattered throughout Spira.

Ronso

A race of feline-like humanoids. They absorb techniques from their rivals using the Dragon Soul technique. His blitzball team is the Ronso Fangs.

All the Ronso except Kimahri live on Mount Gagazet. This breed is characterized by its courage, its physical strength and its will. The ronso respect each other with nobility and when they consider that someone has disrespected them, they marginalize him until he is able to earn the respect of his race again (this is the case of Kimahri). Its horn is a symbol of strength and the dehorned are considered cowards or weak.

Guard

A human-like race but with unmatched magical power and distinctive physical features, such as thicker hair and longer limbs. They are in charge of protecting the Ethereum. They live in Guadosalam but also protect the Macalania temple. His blitzball team is the Guado Glories.

Hypello

A race of aquatic humanoids. Their skin is blue, and on land they are somewhat clumsy. However, in the water they perform easily. They live in villages built under water. They are very reserved. They are in charge of driving the shupafs that transport people from Río de la Luna Sur to Río de la Luna Norte, and vice versa.

Monsters

When any living non-monster dies, it must be "sent" so that he can go to the Ethereal and rest in peace. If it is not "sent", the soul becomes envy of the living, over time that envy turns into hatred and finally, it becomes a monster to sow chaos and destruction. Other souls may accept their death and head out into the Ethereal on their own.

World of Final Fantasy X

The world of Final Fantasy is called Spira.

  • Besaid Island: It is a small island located south of Spira. In it live Yuna, Wakka and Lulu. It's the place where Yuna grew up, and he considers it his birthplace still being born in Bevelle. In the PAL and International versions, the group must face dark Valefor if it wants to enter the village just before defeating Sinh.
    • Temple of Besaid: Temple of prayer of the island of Besaid. In it, Yuna becomes invocative and gets her first eon; Valefor. Inside there is a statue of the High invocator Braska, the father of Yuna.
  • Island of Kilika: Small island located between Besaid and Luca. During the game, she suffers from a Sinh attack that completely wipes her out, leaving many dead and the island completely destroyed.
    • Kilika Forest: Roll the island of Kilika and guard the temple.
    • Temple of Kilika: Temple of prayer of the island of Kilika. He worships the Fire element and Yuna gets his second eon, Ifrit.
  • Luca: It is the second largest city in Spira. Bevelle is one of the most populated and everything is appreciated for the blitzball stadium. It also has an auditorium.
  • Camino de Miihen: Trail north of Luca which is the transit place of travelers and especially of hucobos. He receives the name of General Miihen, who together with more warriors came out of Luca willing to defeat Sihn. Along the way you can see evidence of the destruction of Sihn with great ruins hidden between the weed.
  • Trail of the Hongo Rocks: Way that ends in the Temple of Djose. Near the end of the game, this is the place where the group meets the Dark Magus Sisters.
  • Temple of Djose: Temple that worships the Ray element, where the Ixion eon is obtained.
  • Rio de la Luna: Road separated by a river that crosses with an animal similar to an elephant called Shupaf. You can also find several object sellers.
  • Guadosalam: Home of the Guado and place where the residence of Seymour and Etéreo is located, where the souls of the deceased will stop after being properly sent by an invocator.
  • Ray Plain: Dark plain that is in permanent storm and where rays are constantly falling. It is full of great pararrhoea built by a certain man who, ironically, died of lightning. Cactilios can be found here and, at the end of the game, the dark Ixion.
  • Macalania Forest: Crystal-like forest composed of several floors where strange water element monsters appear. With the mirror of the 7 stars placed somewhere, you can get the ultimate weapons of the characters of the game.
    • Temple of Macalania: Temple run by Seymour Guado. In it, you can get Shiva. At the end of the game, here appears the dark Shiva.
  • Bikanel Desert: Home of the Albhed and therefore of Rikku. At the end of the game, you can find the dark Ifrit here.
  • Bevelle: Largest town of Spira. Formerly it was next to Zanarkand one of Spira's most prosperous cities. Today it is the headquarters of the venerable and pays tribute to Yevon with excessive rigidity. In her temple, Yuna gets her fifth eon, Bahamut.
  • Plain of Calm: Vasta plain where there have been many battles of invocators with Sihn. Receive that name thanks to the period of tranquility that comes after the defeat of Sihn, called La Calma.
    • Remiem Temple: Temple found in a hidden place of the Plain of Calm (to arrive you need a hut). Here Yuna can get the eon Sisters Magus after beating all the eons of Belgemine (including the hidden eons) and get two key objects to unlock the door to the speaker's room. History tells that before Sihn destroyed the plain, this temple was right in the center of it.
    • Cueva of the stolen speaker: Cave that is down a path between the Plain of Calm and Mount Gagazet. Here Yuna can get the hidden eon Yojimbo. At the end of the game you will find here the dark Yojimbo.
  • Monte Gagazet: Snowy mountains located north of the Plain of Calm and guarding the city of Zanarkand. It's the territory of the Ronso. At the end of the game, you can find here Dark Atima.
  • Zanarkand: We walked for it at the beginning of the game, when it was still the most prosperous city of Spira, a thousand years ago. After its destruction it has been ruined and full of lucilos, since the aura of death hangs over it. It is the goal of the protagonists of the game and the pilgrimage of every invocator to obtain the Supreme Eon, the only means of defeating Shin. At the end of the game, you will find here the dark Bahamut.
  • Temple of Baaj: After the scene in the Zanarkand a thousand years ago, this is the first place of Spira to visit in the game. It is an ancient temple in half dim ruins. Tidus finds refuge when he first comes to Spira. Later, you can return to him through the flying ship of Cid. And one can get in it the Anima eon (Seymour's Supreme Eon that did not come to use against Sihn) after having activated the statues of the entrance.
  • Omega Ruins: You reach them through the flying boat. Deep in the cave awaits the Omega Ente. It is the best place to train and thus complete the dial board.

Gameplay

Final Fantasy X is a Japanese RPG (role playing game), with a turn based combat system called BTV (Variable Turn Battle) controlled by a bar determined by the character parameters.. Depending on the chosen command, the turns will vary (eg when using a turbo you lose some subsequent turns). In combat we can manage up to three characters at the same time, although we can replace them in battle, one of the main novelties of this installment. Both the settings and the characters are made with 3D models.

The story is linear, about 40 hours long, although there are numerous subquests and mini-games that make this game last more than 100 hours. Although if you intend to complete "the sphere board" (training system), the game could take around 175 hours to complete.

This is the first Final Fantasy to feature character voices, although in Europe they are in English. All the texts, however, have been translated into Spanish.

In this Final Fantasy experience (pH) gives us "points" (UD: Development Units) to move on a sphere board in which each square covered means the acquisition of a new ability, magic or the improvement of one of its characteristics for the character in question. The route to follow is not linear, so that in different situations we will be forced to choose between the different possible paths. Thus, we can delve into the role facet that the game incorporates, creating characters to our liking. We can improve Auron's strength and Yuna's magic, as the game proposes, or vice versa if we wish.

Like all Final Fantasy games, a minigame has been added. In this case we have the "blitzball" (or "blitzball"). We can participate in leagues and championships, earning items and abilities for our characters (above all, it is very important to get Wakka's Turbos). The sport itself is a mixture of football and water polo in which the players of each team move inside a large sphere filled with water.

Displacements and World Maps

The gameplay of Final Fantasy X differs from previous Final Fantasy games in that it lacks a "world map" bird's eye view interactive Previous games had a miniature representation of the vast areas (countryside, deserts, jungles etc.) between the cities and locations in the game, used for long-distance travel. Instead, FFX locations are essentially contiguous and never merge on a world map.

Map Director Takayoshi Nakazato explained that in Final Fantasy X, he wanted to implement a more realistic concept than previous Final Fantasy games, offering 3D environments, as opposed to pre-rendered graphics (he refers to them as "pseudo 3D environment "). Theoretically, the whole world can be traversed with these 3D environments, which touch each other at their ends, so a map is meaningless.

Battle System

Final Fantasy X features the Conditional Turn-Based Battle (CTB) battle system instead of the traditional Active Time Battle (ATB) used in previous games in the series. CTB was developed by Toshiro Tsuchida, who had Final Fantasy IV's ATB system in mind when developing it. While ATB uses real-time elements, CTB is based on a format that stops the battle during each player's turn. Thus giving the player an indefinite period to think and select an action. It also allows the attributes and actions of characters and enemies to affect the number of turns they have and the order in which they happen. For example, a fast character will attack more times than a slow one. The game provides a graphical timeline at the top right of the screen detailing the order of upcoming turns.

For the rest, the game makes use of the typical elements of the saga, such as the use of different weapons (sabers, swords, magic wands, spears and even cacti or blitzballs), magic, objects and invocations in the case of Yuna, the only summoner of the group.

Sphere board

The level-up system of Final Fantasy X, through a sphere board, is unique in the RPG genre (except for the new version of Final Fantasy II: Dawn of Souls). The characters acquire skill points in each combat that, when passing certain thresholds, grant displacement units (UD). Sphere levels, in turn, allow players to move around the Sphere Board, a default board with several hundred interconnected nodes consisting of various bonuses to abilities and stats. Some objects called "spheres" (obtained from defeated enemies, treasure chests, and as prizes for other events) can be placed on those nodes, unlocking their function for the selected character. In this way, the development of the playable characters resembles a board game.

Producer Yoshinori Kitase has explained that the purpose behind the Sphere Board is to give players an interactive means of increasing their character's attributes, so that they are able to observe the development of those attributes first hand. and can interfere with it. The sphere board also allows players to fully customize characters against their desired purpose in battle, for example making the mage Yuna physically powerful, or the swordsman Auron having healing abilities. The International and PAL versions of the game include an optional Expert mode of the Sphere Board. In this mode, all characters start in the middle of the board and must follow whatever path the player chooses. As a trade off the expert sphere board has fewer total nodes, thereby decreasing the total stat boosts available during the game.
