The national flag of Fiji was adopted on October 10, 1970. It is a light blue cloth on which the Union Jack appears, which is the flag of the United Kingdom, in the canton and, on its left side, the shield of the country itself (without the figures of the supports, the burelete, the crest, or the national motto). The shield is virtually identical to the one used during British colonial rule. The Fiji flag is inspired by the Blue Ensign, which is a dark blue flag that incorporates the British flag in its upper right quadrant and is used as an emblem by numerous British government institutions, colonies and even four independent countries that chose to continue flying. the same colonial flag after their respective independences, these countries being Australia, New Zealand, Tuvalu and Fiji included.

Fiji's coat of arms and flag were not altered when the country became a republic in 1987. The colonial flag was very similar to the current one but, following the scheme of the Blue Ensign, dark blue. Currently this flag is the flag of the Fiji government and is used by some governmental institutions and departments.

However, Fiji's Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama has announced on January 1, 2013 that a new flag, without the UK flag in the canton, will be introduced as it represents the country's position in the Pacific and the world, two months after an announcement that the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II will be withdrawn from the Fijian dollar.

On February 3, 2015, Fiji's Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama announced that a national competition will be held to design the new flag, with the aim of having it flown on October 11, 2015, on the 45th anniversary of independence. However, in August 2016 plans to change it were scrapped, at least in the short term.
