Fianna Fáil
The Fianna Fáil (pronounced [ˌfʲiən̪ˠə ˈfˠaːlʲ]; the traditional translation of the Irish term would be «Warriors of Destiny ») is an Irish political party positioned between the political center and the center-right. Historically, Fianna Fáil has been to the left of Fine Gael and to the right of Sinn Féin and the Labor Party. It is also generally seen as a catch-all, populist party, representing a wide range of people from all social classes. It has alternated in government with Fine Gael throughout its history, either with an absolute majority or with alliances with the Green Party or the Progressive Democrats; Therefore it is one of the main parties in the country.
He currently leads the Irish government, with Taoiseach Micheál Martin at the helm.
History
Founded in 1926 by Éamon de Valera and his Sinn Féin followers opposed to the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, it aimed to promote the independence of Ireland. He developed a program of a socializing nature and in 1932 he achieved power, which he has held intermittently throughout the history of Ireland. All its leaders have at some time held the office of Taoiseach.
It has a youth party, Ógra Fianna Fáil, formed in the mid-1970s and very active. At European level, Fianna Fáil has been a member of the European Parliamentary Union of Nations and the Group of European Conservatives and Reformists, but in 2004 it allied itself with the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe.
Party leaders
Both Mary McAleese, former president of the Republic of Ireland, and Brian Cowen former Taoiseach (prime minister) belong to this party. However, since 26 January 2011, the leader is Micheál Martin, who took over following Cowen's resignation caused by an intense government crisis and eventually became Taoiseach in June 2020.
