Fernando Ezequiel Cavenaghi (Eduardo O'Brien, born in Bragado, Buenos Aires, Argentina, on September 21, 1983) is an Argentine former soccer player who played as a striker. He is the tenth highest scorer in the history of River Plate (112 goals), where he won five local and three international championships. During his experience in Europe, he especially excelled at Girondins de Bordeaux. There he was voted Best Foreign Player in Ligue 1 in 2008.

Trajectory

Beginnings

He began playing football in the lower divisions of Rivadavia at the age of 9, a team from the neighboring city of Chacabuco and later moved on to Club Atlético River Plate. At the age of 16 he was called to train with the First.

River Plate

He made his debut against Club Guaraní, for the Copa Libertadores, on March 6, 2001. He came on for Nelson Cuevas 17 minutes from the end; he gave an assist to Javier Saviola and also scored a goal.

At 18 years and four months old, Fernando Cavenaghi made his debut in the First Division in the game in which River Plate, led by Tolo Gallego, beat Estudiantes de La Plata 6-2 in the Clausura 2001. He entered the 38 minutes into the second half, replacing Javier Saviola.

His first goal was made on the seventh date of the same tournament, at home in a 3-2 win against Argentinos Juniors. He was downgraded again when he took over as the technical director of the Ramón Díaz team, but he immediately established himself as the top scorer for the Under-19 team that won the Chivas Cup in Mexico. In his first full season he scored 17 goals in 23 games, including a hat-trick against the Estudiantes de La Plata club. Months later, at barely 18 years old, Fernando enjoyed a double game: he was proclaimed champion of a regular First Division tournament together with his teammates for the first time in his short and successful sports career, in the Clausura 2002, and he established himself as a goalscorer for said tournament with 15 goals. Despite getting injured, in the following tournament, the Apertura 2002, he scored 7 goals.

This would not be his last achievement: in the Clausura 2003 he lifted another champion's cup again, being the top scorer for his team and third in the tournament's final scorer table (behind Luciano Figueroa and Roberto Nanni) with 13 goals converted (only one penalty).

On May 16, 2004, at La Bombonera against Boca Juniors, he scored the only goal for his team with a header. He gave the team led by Leonardo Astrada 1-0, 37 minutes into the first half, after a corner kick from the right. Claudio Husaín hit the near post with his brakes, correcting the direction of the ball and leaving the goalkeeper of the opposing team, Roberto Abbondanzieri, without a reaction.

Before he was twenty years old, he had achieved notable results in his sports career. The last title achieved in River was in the Clausura 2004, in addition to his last tournament in the institution. He was the team's top scorer with 9 goals. In total, up to that moment, in the Núñez entity, he had scored 72 goals in a total of 122 games, before signing with the Russian club Spartak Moscow, at the beginning of the 2004/2005 season, for a price of £ 6.5 million.

On November 21, 2004, he was back in the country for the break in the Russian championship and made headlines because on Sunday he joined the millionaire brava bar as one more fan, getting on an avalanche and making noise a hype from Los Borrachos del Tablón.

The criticism that Cavenaghi received from some media led him to give public explanations about these events, which he described as "sentimental".

I always wanted to do something like that, but as I was inside the court I didn't have the chance. But I must clarify that it was not the swollen who invited me to the rostrum, but I called them to take me with the bar.

Regarding the diffusion that this could have in Russia and its consequences (some considered that it could be taken as a lack of professionalism), El Torito was unconcerned. & # 34; What are they going to tell me if I'm on vacation & # 34;, he argued from his logic, in which the River fan and the player agree.

Spartak Moscow

Due to his good performances, offers from European clubs for the Argentine player began to appear. His achievements in soccer evidenced an imminent European future for the goalscorer. CSKA Moscow and Juventus in Turin were interested in him, until finally in the 2004 season he signed, at the age of 20, for Spartak Moscow in Russia for 11.5 million dollars for his pass.

He made 63 appearances and scored 17 goals, including a UEFA Champions League game in his first season. With the passage of time, he was increasingly relegated from the team and, in April 2006, with the arrival of coach Vladimir Fedótov, he was relegated to the substitute bench, and seeing himself without possibilities in the team, he expressed his desire to be transferred. The club accepted and set a price: 12 million dollars.

Girondins from Bordeaux

Cavenaghi in a training with the Bordeaux

At the beginning of 2007 he signed for Girondins de Bordeaux, for 4 and a half years where his goals in his first season allowed him to be runner-up to Olympique Lyonnais. In 2009 the Girondins de Bordeaux was eliminated in the round of 32 of the UEFA Cup after losing 4-3 to Galatasaray and where that same year with his team they brought down a dynasty of 7 consecutive years for Lyon in the Ligue 1, being so that he came to play the French Super Cup against EA Guingamp and winning it 2-0.

He played 105 games and scored 46 goals, winning five titles with his team: 1 Ligue 1 2009, 2 French Super Cups 2008 and 2009 and 2 League Cup 2007 and 2009.

Loan to Mallorca

On August 27, 2010, Mallorca obtained his loan for one season, which saved a purchase option, valued at 3.5 million euros, for him.

He was only at RCD Mallorca for 6 months, playing a total of 11 games in the Spanish First Division, 7 of them as a starter and the rest starting from the bench. He scored a total of 2 goals (he scored a double against Real Sociedad). In the Copa del Rey he scored 4 goals, both doubles against Real Sporting de Gijón and UD Almería.

Loan to Sport Club Internacional

On January 26, 2011, Internacional de Porto Alegre signed a one-year loan to the former River Plate striker, whose pass still belonged to the club to Girondins de Bordeaux.

Cavenaghi was teammates with compatriots such as Mario Bolatti, Andrés D'Alessandro and Pablo Guiñazu. He played 13 games, scored 5 goals and his team won the 2011 Gaucho Championship after beating Grêmio in the final.

Second stage at River Plate

In July 2011, he rescinded his contract with Internacional de Porto Alegre to move to the club where he debuted, River Plate, to help his team ascend to the First Division, after being relegated for the first time in its history.

Cavenaghi in a match with River Plate

He returned to the club with his friend, Alejandro Domínguez. In this way Cavenaghi became captain of the team during his time in the First National B.

On Saturday, September 3, on the fourth date of the 2011/12 Primera B Nacional, he scored his first goal with the River shirt since his return, against Quilmes. He scored again, against Defensa y Justicia for the fifth date in a 2-2 draw. He scored his first hat-trick since he returned to the Millionaire, on October 5, 2011, in a game against Atlanta for the ninth date. On the twelfth date he converted a penalty goal against Aldosivi. He converted 4 goals in the match against Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy for the thirteenth date of the tournament. It was the first time that Cavenaghi scored 4 goals for the Núñez institution and it had been 9 years since a River player had scored 4 goals in the same game, precisely since February 20, 2002, when Ariel Ortega scored four goals against Unión of Santa Fe, in what was a comfortable 6-0 victory for River. Cavenaghi had converted the two remaining goals. On the fifteenth date he scored 2 goals against the Guillermo Brown club. He scored again against Rosario Central, in what was his first goal in the return to Monumental in a 1-1 draw. On Sunday, February 5, 2012, Cavenaghi would score a goal in a 1-1 draw against Almirante Brown, which would be his fourteenth goal since his return to River Plate. El Torito would end the first stage of the tournament being the top scorer for his team with 15 goals in 19 games.

On the twenty-first date of the tournament, he would score his team's first goal in River Plate's 3-0 win against Independiente Rivadavia; On the third date, against Desamparados de San Juan, he gave two goal assists, one to Rogelio Funes Mori and another to David Trezeguet. On March 17, 2012, Cavenaghi scored a double in his team's 3-0 victory against Deportivo Merlo; on date 29 he converted again in the match that River defeated Huracán 2-0. On May 19, 2012, he scored a free kick goal in a 2-2 draw against Guillermo Brown. He finished the 2011/12 Primera B Nacional season with 19 goals in 38 games, being the team's top scorer in the tournament. After a season in the Primera B Nacional, the team achieved a return to the First Division of Argentine soccer, consecrating itself divisional champion, fulfilling its objective and that of Alejandro Domínguez of returning River to the First Division of Argentina.

On June 27, 2012, River Plate manager Matías Almeyda, after renewing his contract as coach, publicly stated that he would not include the team's goalscorer and captain in the list of reinforcements for the following season.

River Exit

After achieving promotion with River Plate, both he and Alejandro Domínguez had a tough clash with president Daniel Passarella and ended up leaving the club: Domínguez had to continue his career at Valencia, the club that had loaned him out and Cavenaghi was left free. Both declared that: "while this Passarella we will not return anymore".

Villarreal

In August 2012, after being released from River Plate, he signed for a year at Villarreal to play in the Spanish Second Division. He scored his first two goals for the yellow submarine in the victory 2-1 against Real Madrid B of Spain, he only played 19 games and scored 4 goals.

Pachuca

On January 30, 2013, Argentine striker Fernando Cavenaghi became Pachuca's reinforcement for the Clausura 2013, the team said in a statement. Cavenaghi, 29, came to Mexico from Villareal in the Spanish second division, where he played the second half of 2012 and the first month of 2013.

Fernando Cavenaghi scored 5 goals between the Mx League and the Mx Cup reaching the middle of the tournament, scoring regularly in the last games of the Tuzo team.

Towards the start of the tournament Cavenaghi played his first preseason in Mexico with Pachuca, being the team's top scorer during the preseason, scoring nine times in 5 games (four against Delfines de Acapulco, one half-field goal against Puebla, two to León, and two to Estudiantes Tecos), which gave their Coach Gabriel Caballero great confidence, playing all the matches of both the Telcel Cup and the Pachuca Cup, reaching the final of both mini-tournaments, losing the final of the Telcel Cup on penalties after drawing 1 - 1 with the León club, but the revenge came, and then they played the Pachuca Cup where Pachuca CF reached the final again against León, but this time Pachuca was crowned champion after losing 4 - 3, came on as a substitute, and thanks to a last-minute goal he managed for his team to go to penalties, remaining champion of said tournament, although he missed his penalty kick, they won 9 - 8 against Club León.

The forward commented in an interview on the importance of winning at home and assured that he wanted to turn the Hidalgo Stadium into a fortress: “you have to score goals, as a forward we live by scoring and it is always important, whether it is Cuna Telcel, the League or the Champions League, they always serve to build confidence and to win, it came in handy for us and it will be important to make us strong at home”, in addition to assuring that he wanted to become the goal-scoring man of his squad.

At the end of 2013, his contract with Pachuca ended and he became a free player. In statements by the player himself, he said that he did not renew with the Mexican team since he wanted to return to River Plate to retire from that institution.

Third stage at River Plate

On January 2, 2014, the agreement was confirmed, postponed due to differences in the economic aspect, between the leaders and the player's representative, thus sealing his return to River Plate for the third time, after his departure in mid-2014. 2012. He scored his first goal on his return to the club against Godoy Cruz in his team's 1-2 defeat corresponding to the third date of the 2014 Final Tournament. The following game he would score again in another defeat for his team against Colón by 3-1. Three dates later he would score the winning goal for 1-0 against Arsenal. He scored again against Lanús two dates later in another 2-0 victory for his team. He scored his first double on his return to the club, against Racing Club in his team's 3-2 victory, ending an eight-game streak without scoring. Two dates later he scored again in his team's 5-0 win against Quilmes AC, a result that meant the club's thirty-fifth title at the local level. On May 24, in San Luis, he played his last game prior to the operation, the Superfinal against San Lorenzo, winning the First Division Championship Cup 2013/14, when River Plate defeated the Catalan team by 1 to 0 thanks to a goal by Germán Pezzella. After this match, Cavenaghi decided to undergo surgery for a bursitis that afflicted him on the toe of his right foot, the product of an injury that occurred on the sixth date of the 2014 Final Tournament. The operation took place at the Dupuytren Sanatorium in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Balvanera, where he spent the night accompanied by a friend on Thursday, August 14, 2014. The operation is successful, he is discharged shortly after, and begins a recovery period that will take him away from the fields for approximately 4 months, reappearing on Sunday November 23 in an away match against Racing Club, for the seventeenth date of the 2014 Transition Tournament. Despite River failing to win the local tournament, Cavenaghi ends the year in the best way playing a few minutes in the second leg for the final of the 2014 Copa Sudamericana against Atlético Nacional, in which the millionaire team would end up being victorious and crowned champion. On November 30, 2014 in a match against Banfield at the Monumental, Fernando scored his 100th goal with the River shirt in what was a 3-2 victory. Cavenaghi is the starter in the 2015 Copa Libertadores final against Tigres, where the millionaire won 3-0. He was replaced in the second half, thus closing his cycle at the club by lifting the trophy as captain. Among all his stages, Cavegol played 212 games and scored 112 goals, placing him as the tenth highest scorer in the history of Club Atlético River Plate.
