February, The very rich hours of the Duke of Berry, principles s. XV.

In the Gregorian calendar, February is the second month of the year and is the shortest: it has 28 days in common years and 29 in leap years. On very rare occasions there has been a February 30, produced either by the conversion from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, or by the adoption of a revolutionary calendar in which every month had 30 days.

It was named in honor of the februa in the Lupercalia, the festival of purification in Ancient Rome: Sabines celebrate the annual festival of purification which they called februa (from februum, a kind of strap), on a date now identified as February 15. After the founding of Rome and the subsequent rise of the Roman Empire, the dominant city borrowed its name from the 'Februas' festivals of the Roman Empire. to designate the month in which these took place, which at that time was the last of the year.

For the Catholic Church, this month is dedicated to the Holy Spirit and the Holy Family.

Iconology

Among the Romans this month was under the protection of Neptune. They represented him under the image of a woman dressed in blue, with her tunic raised and fastened with a belt. She carried an aquatic bird in her hands and brought on her head an urn from which water came out in abundance, to indicate that it is the month of rains; which also meant the gray heron and the fish that were laid at her feet.

Cl. Andran allegorizes it in the following way: the god of the waters with his trident in his hand, is standing on a cave formed by waterfalls, full of nets and other fishing and fish instruments, a sign of this month. Close to everything you can see Neptune's horses and further away a ship with its rigging. The decorations are a mixture of sea birds, fish, corals and all kinds of rich shells.
