In Orphic cosmogony, Phanes (in ancient Greek Φανης Phanês, 'resplendent'), Phanetes or Firstborn (Πρωτογόνος, 'the first to be born') is a god born from the cosmic egg that made or engendered Time. He is the primal deity that constitutes the origin of procreation and the generation of all things. He is often equated to Eros, who was one of the primordial divinities according to the account of Hesiod's Theogony. He also received the names of Ericepeo, Metis, Príapo and Antauges. In some Orphic fragments Phanes is considered the son of Ether.

Phanes was the father of Night (according to the Orphic tradition), with whom he united to have Heaven and Earth. He was also the father of the seas, the Sun, the Moon, the stars, Echidna and one of the three races of men, the so-called golden race , to whom he gave the temperate zone as a place to live. from the earth. All this was done by Phanes from inside a cave called Sanctuary of Night.

Phanes was the king of the gods but later he withdrew to a high place in the sky from where he illuminated the world and gave the scepter of his reign to Night, who in turn gave it to his son, Heaven. The scepter was forcibly taken from him by his son Cronus, who in turn lost it to Zeus, the final ruler of the universe. It is said that, probably on the advice of Night, Zeus devoured Phanes, thereby absorbing his powers and within him the entire universe was united: the elements, the gods, all things born in the past, and all things that were to come. to emerge in the future.

Phanes was characterized as a deity with golden wings on his shoulders and a dragon-shaped body. She was a hermaphrodite, with the sexual organs behind her. She had four heads: a lion's, a goat's, a serpent's, and a bull's. She was driving a horse-drawn winged chariot.

In the Orphic hymn number VI he is invoked as Protogono.
