The carrera family is a Chilean family originally from Castilla y León, Spain, living in Chile since the 17th century, which had an outstanding public participation during the 19th century, mainly during independence of his country. It is considered one of the most influential lineages in Chile. Its founder and genearch was Juan Ignacio de la Carrera Yturgoyen (1620-1682), who settled in Chile in 1639; In 1655 he married Catalina de Elguea y Cáceres, great-great-granddaughter of Diego García de Cáceres, with whom he had ten children. In addition, he had three other natural children before getting married.

According to Juan Luis Espejo, other consanguineous families with the Carrera are the Araníbar, the Barrenechea, the Lecuna, the Prado, the Rodríguez, the Guerrero, the Ureta, the Valdés, the Mujica, the Elzo, the Errázuriz, the Zañartu and the Cortés.
