Fabiana Cantilo (Buenos Aires, Argentina, March 3, 1959) is an Argentine rock and pop performer, singer, composer, and actress. Considered one of the most important female voices of Argentine rock, throughout her career she has sold approximately 6 million records.

Biography

She was born in Buenos Aires on March 3, 1959, the daughter of Silvina Luro Pueyrredón and Gabriel Cantilo. Her first steps in music were at the age of 8 when she was already studying guitar. Her first great presentation was at a school event at the Bayard Institute, there she performed "Balada para un loco" in front of Astor Piazzolla and Amelita Baltar who were in the audience. With her family, Fabiana moved to a farm near Ezeiza and began secondary school at the Colegio San Marcos de Monte Grande. After finishing school, she received a scholarship in the United States to pursue a degree in Fine Arts, but two months later she returned to Argentina. She began singing in the Old Café, a pub where her father exhibited her paintings, with a repertoire that included songs by Yes, Genesis, The Beatles. There she sang with Suéter, where she met some of her fellow travelers, such as Miguel Zavaleta, Daniel Melingo and Andrés Calamaro. Some time after her, Zavaleta contacts her with Viviana Tellas, who convinces her to join the Las Bay Biscuits group.

1980s

She began her career in the early 1980s as a member of Las Bay Biscuits, a theatrical rock group made up entirely of women, which participated in shows by top-level bands such as Serú Girán, Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota (who summoned her for their 1981 demo, on the song "Superlogico"). In 1982, Daniel Melingo invited her to join Los Twist along with Pipo Cipolatti, Polo Corbella, Eduardo Cano and Gonzalo Palacios. That same year she recorded vocals for & # 34; Art-deco liner & # 34; in Pubis angelica, the first album published by Charly García as a soloist.

In 1983, Charly García called her to be a backup singer in the presentations of his third solo album Clics modernos. There she met Fito Páez, began a love relationship and inaugurated a period of excesses.

The Twists

Fabiana was the first female voice of one of the founding bands of the new Argentine rock of the 80s, Los Twist. It was created by Pipo Cipolatti and Daniel Melingo, in 1982, and integrated by Gonzalo Palacios in winds, Eduardo Cano on guitars and Polo Corbella on drums, who was replaced by Rolo Rossini. They played in different places in the City of Buenos Aires, especially the old Café Einstein, where they also performed with Sumo, Soda Stereo and Virus. In 1983 they recorded their first album, La dicha en movimiento, which was a success recorded in 29 hours and sold more than 120,000 units, making it a platinum record. With hits like "Cleopatra the Queen of the Twist", "I thought it was about blind men", "Ritmo placed", "Floating soaps", among others; of this last theme, a video clip was made. It was produced by Charly García, who along with Andrés Calamaro, participated in the album, on keyboards. After a tour throughout the country presenting their first album, the band traveled to Europe in order to record a new one. It was the best moment of the formation when Cantilo announced the decision to leave them. The blow was hard to overcome and even jeopardized the continuity of the group. She was replaced by other singers, but the band still got together from time to time, like in 1988, 1991, 1992, 1996, and more. In 1991 she was invited to participate in the album Cataratas musicales, in which she puts her voice to the song "Ricardo Rubén".

Start of solo career

In 1985 he recorded his first solo album, Detectives, produced by Charly García, with songs written by him, Fito, Spinetta and two in which Fabiana co-authored. For the recording, she had a band made up of Oscar Morrón, Richard Coleman, Daniel Melingo, Gustavo Bazterrica, Oscar Media Villa, Rinaldo Rafael, Negro Garcia López, Polo Corbella and Fernando Zamalea. The presentation took place at the Gracias Nena Pub, with the Páez band.

During 1986 and 1989 she studied singing. She worked as a showgirl for Charly and Fito, among other artists. She did background vocals for the album Prive, by Luis Alberto Spinetta, and for La la la, by Spinetta and Páez. She put together her own support group, Los Perros Calientes, with Gabriel Carámbula. With them she recorded her second album in 1988 and with the support of her partner in those years, Fito Páez in the artistic production. Highlighting the themes "Nothing", "Just give me a little" and "Empire State". The album was reissued without a booklet in 2006, with a commentary by Marcelo Fernández Bitar.

In 1989, Pete Seeger, the father of folk and protest music, performed with León Gieco in Buenos Aires at the Teatro Ópera on October 12, 13 and 15. Fabiana, Baglietto, Fito and other musicians, invited by León, participated in this concert. The money raised was donated to a hospital in Nicaragua where Seeger's daughter lives.

That same year, he composed "A punto de caer" with García, which was included in the album How to get girls.

1990s

In 1990 he composed the song "Siempre puedes olvidar", included (in a version sung by both) in the album released that same year, Filosofía bara y zapatos de goma, from Garcia. In the same year, she participated in & # 34; My Buenos Aires Rock & # 34;, a concert organized by the Municipality of Buenos Aires, which brought together one hundred thousand people on Avenida 9 de Julio, together with Charly García, Luis Alberto Spinetta and the port. At the end of that same year, she opened for none other than Soda Stereo at the official presentation of Canción Animal at the José Amalfitani stadium.

Her most successful work was in 1991 with Algo mejor. With the artistic realization and general direction of Fito Páez, the album had a wide repercussion thanks to the cut "Mi enfermedad", by Andrés Calamaro, and other songs such as "Mary Poppins y el chimney sweep", "A Clumsy Girl in the Big City", "Kitty", "Arcos" (guitars by Gustavo Cerati), "Things that happen" and "Something better".

Her career continued as a guest vocalist on Charly García, Los Twist and Fito Páez shows, and as opening act for Roxette in Vélez in 1992.

In 1992, Pipo Cipolatti offered Cantilo to participate in his new program: "Boro Boro", a name that Telefe took from one of the songs by Los Twist. It started in 1992, and was taken off the air after a short time. Fabiana played the role of the nice "Doctor Cantilo", had the participation of Pappo, Carolina Peleritti and Nathán Pinzón.

In 1994 Cantilo toured the country presenting Golpes al vacío, in which there are no songs by Páez or García. "There are no songs by them, they are my parents, just to show people what I am by myself" (H. Vargas, p. 125). The videos on this album were: "A passage up to there& #3. 4; and "Wrong love". For this occasion, he puts together a band of excellent musicians, made up of: Fenna Della Maggiora (guitar, choirs); Guillermo Arrom (guitar, backing vocals); Andrés Dulcet (bass); Fernando "Pepi" Brown (drums); Cristian Hubert (keyboards); and Verónica Verdier (choirs). This band (with the exception of Verónica Verdier) is the one with which he will later record the album Sol En Cinco .

In February 1995 he performed at the "International Song Festival", in Mar del Plata, together with Charly García and Paralamas, among others. Then, with the production of Pedro Aznar, he presented his new LP, Sol en cinco , with guests such as Fito Páez, Gabriel Carámbula and David Lebón. From this album stands out the ballad "Nada es para siempre", whose lyrics and music are by Páez and the Spanish version of the song from the first solo album by Annie Lennox, "Diva", from 1992, "Money Can´t Buy It", translated as "Nothing buys it". The videos of "Sol en Cinco" are: "Ya Fue", "Dear Totó" and "Nothing is forever". For this CD, in 1996 she obtained the award from the Association of Entertainment Chroniclers (ACE) for best rock / melodica / pop artist.

In 1997 two unofficial compilations came out. Lo mejor, which contains his greatest hits up to that year, with two previously unreleased songs, "Dulce condena", by Andrés Calamaro and Ariel Rot and a dance version of the song " Nothing is forever (Forever radio edit)"; the other CD in the collection: Free access: I no longer believe in your love, with 10 songs from their respective first two albums as soloists: Detectives and Fabiana Cantilo and the Hot Dogs.

In 1998 she released What are they laughing at?, produced by Ulises Butrón, which Fabiana confesses was her first most personal album, with a cover in which she is seen wearing a dress and surrounded by of pigs, which is the animal that corresponds to him in the Chinese horoscope. The first cut, and only video clip, stood out from the album: Júpiter, directed by Nahuel Lerena. On December 17, she won the MTV Award for Best Female Video. Fabiana Cantilo was the first Argentine singer to win this award.

In 1999 a second CD with greatest hits was released entitled Lo mejor de Fabiana Cantilo, and she was quoted by Lito Vitale to participate in his album El grito sagrado together with María Elena Walsh, Víctor Heredia, Jairo, Alejandro Lerner, Sandra Mihanovich, Pedro Aznar and Juan Carlos Baglietto, interpreting the "Salute to the flag".

2000s

In April 2001, following the visit of the Spanish musician Alejandro Sanz, Cantilo was summoned to open the show that the singer gave at the Vélez Stadium.

At the end of 2002, after four years without new material and having moved to San Martín de los Andes, he presented Información Celeste, an album of his own and autobiographical songs, with twelve songs with the rhythm that characterizes it. The promotional video is Destination Marked. The album was very well received by critics and the public and toured the whole country for two years.

In 2003, Cantilo ventured into electronic music putting his voice to the songs of his friends from the group "Stimulation" Parallel group of "Filippis Hands". A demo was recorded with around five songs in English that only a few fans could get hold of. Also this year she participated as the opening act for the Colombian Shakira, at the Vélez Sarfield stadium.

In November 2004, Fabiana participated as a guest artist in the Gustavo Cerati recital that was held in Puerto Madero, together they performed the song “Te voy para que me llevas”, to a great ovation from the public.

Inconsciente colectivo (2005) is a tribute to Argentine rock. It features the participation of Gustavo Cerati, Fito Páez, Daniela Herrero, and Hilda Lizarazu, and includes songs by Luis Alberto Spinetta, Divididos, Suéter, Charly García, Fito Páez, Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota, and Andrés Calamaro. The album surpassed the platinum status with more than 60,000 units sold, in addition to receiving the 2005 Konex Award, the 2006 Gardel Award and two nominations for the 2006 Latin Grammy Awards. This album had the participation of its fans and people who officially voted from a list of more than 30 classic Argentine rock songs, managing to make only 17 songs on the final list. The album stands out for its originality in the arrangements and the intervention of Gustavo Cerati in "Eiti Leda". The recording process was filmed and can be found on the DVD titled Collective Unconscious with the 17 songs and some extras. He was accompanied by an extensive tour throughout the country that lasted almost two years, and it was during this time that he wrote and prepared & # 34; Daughter of Rigor & # 34;.

In 2007 he appeared in a role in the second Comedia film by Fito Páez, Whose is the garter belt?, filmed in Rosario, along with Romina Ricci, Julieta Cardinali and Leonora Balcarce from the producer Circo Beat.

Hija del rigor (2007) is the ninth studio album by Fabiana Cantilo and reflects her consecration not only as the great female voice of national rock, but also as a composer. The first broadcast cut was "Una truce". Includes fourteen new songs. Two of the songs on the album ("Tercas palanganas" and "Viento del oeste") were written by Silvina Luro, Fabianas mother. They are poems that Fabi found and decided to put them to music to turn them into songs. According to Cantilo, this record “smells of wood and truth”.[citation required] Regarding the title, Fabiana prefers that it not be associated with the idea of a victim, but rather “as each woman can interpret that phrase. "We are all children of rigor at some point or in some way."

2008 was an ambivalent year for the singer, on the one hand Daughter of rigor earned her recognition from critics as one of the best works of Argentine rock by a female soloist and on the other the other personal issues led to her having to be admitted motu proprio to a psychiatric clinic. «People after 'pass the storm' He received me very well, with a very good vibe, pampering and a lot of affection. The fans are always on hand, many people when you have a crisis and survive it are quite supportive. When I left the clinic I lowered a couple of gears. I know that I speak much less, I am much more quiet and meditative, but the rest remains the same, "she said. Once she was released, she returned to the stage with shows in La Trastienda and the ND Ateneo.

In 2009 he released his new album titled En la vereda del sol, a continuation of his successful Inconsciente colectivo. The repertoire is made up of songs by: Charly García, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Fito Páez, Andrés Calamaro, Soda Stereo, Los Abuelos de la Nada, Los Pericos, León Gieco, Serú Girán, Invisible, Attaque 77, Intoxicados and Virus. In addition, it has the participation, in voices, of two guests: Kevin Johansen and Gustavo Cordera. En la vereda del sol was recorded at the El Santito studio and mixed at the Panda studios during the months of June, July and August 2009. It was produced by Maximiliano Moran Diuorno and Marcelo Capasso. The recording engineering and mastering was in charge of Nicolás Kalwill. "Collective unconscious" is the first airplay single from the new album. Although that same song served as the title of a previous album, the song itself had not been recorded at that time or included in the album's track listing.

Fabi sings: "Revolve a nest of paper / Reach the peak of pain / Know death and be reborn".
