Evilard
Evilard (German Leubringen) is a Swiss commune in the canton of Bern, located in the administrative district of Biel/Bienne. It borders from north to west clockwise by the communes of Orvin, Biel-Bienne, Twann-Tüscherz and Lamboing.
The commune is made up of the towns of Evilard and Macolin, which have been together for several years. Evilard is an officially bilingual commune.
History
The first written mention of the commune dates back to the year 1300, under the name Lomeringen. The name of the town of Macolin is surely of Burgundian origin. It has been known since 1305, the time when Macalingen was written; in 1342 it became Macoleyn, then Maglingen in 1536 and Mahlingen in 1856.
From 1797 to 1813, under the French regime, Evilard belonged to France, the commune was part of the canton of Bienne, located in the department of Monte Terrible, and from 1800, to the department of Haut-Rhin, to which the department of Monte Terrible was annexed. In 1815, after the Congress of Vienna, the territory of the former Bishopric of Basel was attributed to the canton of Bern. From then on it was part of the bailiwick of Nidau and from 1832 to the district of Biel-Bienne.
In 1902 the commune rejected the merger with the city of Biel-Bienne. The commune was part of the former district of Biel-Bienne until December 31, 2009.
