The Eva Duarte Cup, named after the Argentine first lady Eva Perón, was an official Spanish football tournament organized by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) that pitted the current champions against of the two main club competitions in the country, the League Championship and the Spanish Cup Championship. In the event that a club was champion of both (a circumstance known as a "double"), it was automatically awarded the title, and is considered the official precursor of the Spanish Super Cup.

Officially established in the 1946-47 season, it lasted until the end of the 1952-53 season, that is, a total of seven editions.

The immediate precedent of the Eva Duarte Cup was the 'Argentina' Gold Cup, a similar tournament organized in the 1945-46 season by the Catalan Football Federation, which however does not enjoy official recognition at the national level.

The most successful team in the competition was CF Barcelona, winning the trophy three times, which is why it owns the trophy.

History

The Eva Duarte Cup had its first precedent in the 1940-41 season, when the League and Cup champions of the previous season met for the first time in a friendly tournament as a tribute to the champions called the Champions Cup, which Club Atlético-Aviación won, defeating Real Club Deportivo Español. In the 1945-46 season, the Catalan Football Federation again organized a tournament that pitted the champion of the Spanish League against the champion of the Generalissimo Cup from the previous season (1944-45), at the initiative of the Argentine consul in Barcelona. and called the “Argentina” Gold Cup in honor of the Argentine Nation that donated the trophy. This tournament was won by C. F. Barcelona, who defeated Athletic Club. It is one of the precedents of the Eva Duarte Cup (its official status being disputed as it was not recognized by the RFEF and was organized by the territorial federation), which proclaimed the winner as "champion of champions" of the time, which is why it is also recognized as one of the tournaments that pitted the League and Cup champions against each other.

After them, the first official competition between champions was established in 1941, the Spanish Football Federation President Cup. It was organized by the Royal Spanish Football Federation and was played in a league format between League and Cup champions along with the two best finishers in the league championship after the champion. Due to organizational difficulties, it was not completed until 1947.

Despite the difficulties, it was decided to continue with the competition, but without the inclusion of those classified by the league tournament, leaving the national champions once again in their dispute. Thus was born the Eva Duarte Cup, whose first edition was in 1946-47, although it ended up being played on June 13, 1948 due to calendar problems. Since then, the competition was organized and sponsored under the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) itself, although with the name Copa Eva Duarte de Perón, since the trophy was donated by the wife of the then president of the Argentine Republic, Juan Domingo Perón. The competition would be held, under that name until the 1952-53 season, due to the death, on July 26, 1952, of Eva Duarte de Perón (the last title being given to C.F. Barcelona, after the conquest of the League and Cup (double).

Contrary to what is believed, and according to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), the Eva Duarte Cup was born in 1947 and was precisely in the 1946-47 season the first official edition of the tournament. Valencia CF had just been the champion of the Spanish First Division in 1946-47 and Real Madrid in the 1947 Football Generalissimo Cup; Both faced each other as contenders for the cup, as stated in the rules and regulations, champion of the League and the Cup. The match was held in 1948 and ended in favor of the Madrid club as mentioned above, but said "tournament corresponded to the year 47." For all this, "although it was played in June of 48, it appears in the record as corresponding to 47."

The Real Madrid Football Club was the first team to win this competition, with CF Barcelona being the last, winning three titles in this competition, which earned them the original trophy as property.

The competition finally came to an end with the death of María Eva Duarte de Perón due to a devastating cancer; she died at 33 years of age. The competition was restored in 1982 under the name of the Spanish Super Cup, this was approved by the assembly of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

Six clubs participated in the seven editions of the Cup. The club with the most participations in the competition was C. F. Barcelona (5 times), along with Valencia C. F. (2 times), and Atlético de Madrid (2 times). Real Madrid C. F., Athletic Club, and Sevilla C. F. participated in one edition.
