Etzel is a mythical king, a character from the Song of the Nibelungs, who is manipulated by princess Krimilda to take revenge on the Burgundians.

Etzel is actually the literary transposition of the historical Attila, and the massacre that Etzel carries out among the Burgundians is based on the historical facts surrounding the extermination of this people at the hands of the Huns, around the year 436. Naturally, these Historical events, as well as the figure of Etzel/Attila himself, are heavily literaturized, almost beyond recognition.
