Eto Demerzel is a character in Isaac Asimov's Foundation saga. He is the Prime Minister of the Emperor of the Galactic Empire Cleon I at the time when Hari Seldon is developing his science of psychohistory. Demerzel plays a fundamental role in the entire history of humanity. As one of the first robots of the dawn, he is charged with making all life comply with the Three Laws of Robotics. His final mission, as Daneel Olivaw, is to prepare humanity for the possible final confrontation against real invading aliens from outside the Galaxy, on Foundation and Earth. Eto Demerzel is destined to disappear as his positronic brain degrades faster and faster.

Other identities

At the end of Prelude to the Foundation, it is revealed to Hari Seldon that Eto Demerzel is actually Daneel Olivaw, a robot who has been watching over humanity for centuries. He is also the same person as journalist Chetter Hummin, the first identity with which Daneel introduces himself to Hari Seldon.
