Esperanto Academy
Akademio de Esperanto (in Spanish: Academia de Esperanto) is an organization whose main task is to preserve and protect the fundamentals of the Esperanto language and control its evolution, in a way similar to the role of the Royal Spanish Academy.
The antecedent of the Academy was created in 1905 by the Universal Esperanto Congress. Following a proposal by L. L. Zamenhof, the Linguistic Committee (Lingva Komitato) was created. In 1948 it adopted its current name.
Their decisions are not binding on the speakers; this obligation is only held by the so-called Fundamento de Esperanto, established in the aforementioned first Universal Congress of Esperanto in 1905.
The Academy is made up of 45 members elected for 9 years. It is renewed by thirds every 3 years.
