Ernst Hugo Heinrich Pfitzer
Ernst Hugo Heinrich Pfitzer (March 26, 1846 – December 3, 1906), was a German botanist, mycologist, pteridologist, algologist, Professor of Botany at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.
Biography
Pfitzer was from the beginning a follower and defender of the systematics of Carlos Linnaeus.
In 1871 he established a correspondence with Charles Darwin.
In 1886 he created the genus Paphiopedilum (the name comes from the Greek "Paphia", from "Paphos", epithet of "Venus" and & #34;pedilon" = "sandal" or "slipper" alluding to the shape of the lip like a slipper), belonging to the Orchidaceae family.
Pfitzer describes and establishes in 1888 the genus Eulophidium, a small genus, belonging to the orchid family (Orchidaceae), found in tropical Africa and Madagascar with one species in Brazil.
In 1888 Pfitzer established the genus Scaphosepalum, whose type species is Scaphosepalum ochtodes.
Pfitzer reviews the genus of orchids Phragmipedium in 1903, and establishes five alliances or sections. Also in that same year he revised the genus Paphiopedilum, established by him in 1886.
