In 1993 Enrique graduated from Gulliver Preparatory School and began studying Business Administration at the University of Miami.

Music played an important role for him since his childhood, but it was in adolescence that he began to feel truly curious about dedicating himself to it professionally. He soon discovered a knack for songwriting.

Enrique took his first steps in music hidden from his family. Knowing that his parents would probably balk at that possibility, he decided to ask his babysitter for help. She is she knew the wishes of the youngest of the Iglesias and supported him by giving him 500 dollars to record a demo with which he would later become known in the record companies. In an attempt not to be judged by his last name and to take advantage of the fame of his father Julio, Enrique began to make himself known by Latin American record companies using the last name Martínez and claimed to be originally from Guatemala.

In 1994 Enrique got his first recording contract with the Fonovisa record label. The company signed a three-year contract with the hitherto unknown artist. In this way, Iglesias was able to record his first album in Toronto (Canada) thus having to leave his university career unfinished.

"Si tú te vas" was the first single of his career and the song with which he became known to the general public. The first video clip of his career for this song was shot in Manhattan, New York (USA). The song reached the top of the Latin Billboard chart. This song was followed by the singles "Religious experience", "Trapecista", "Por amarte" and "Don't cry for me".

With his debut album he managed to sell almost six million copies and went on his first concert tour. In Spain the album was released by the independent record company Bat Discos, selling more than half a million copies. Later the disc was recorded in Italian and Portuguese.

The tour started in Odessa, Texas (USA). He performed three consecutive nights at the Plaza de Toros de México and two at the River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires (Argentina). It also offered concerts in 19 stadiums in the United States. The tour had the support of the musical production team of Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Billy Joel or Elvis Presley.
