Enrique Guzmán (Caracas, Venezuela, February 1, 1943) is a Venezuelan-Mexican singer, composer and actor. In the 1960s he was called "the idol of youth" in America Latina and Mexico's most popular singer of the decade.

He was the vocalist and founding member of Los Teen Tops, a group considered a pioneer in rock and roll in Spanish along with groups such as Los Locos del Ritmo, Los Rebeldes Del Rock and Black Jeans. She later became a soloist and thus began a prolific career as a balladeer.

He is considered the King of Rock & Roll in Spanish; and one of the "rock greats" of the Mexican scene (along with Angélica María, César Costa, Julissa, Johnny Laboriel, Manolo Muñoz, Alberto Vázquez, among others).

Biography

The son of Jaime Guzmán Esparza and Elena Vargas, he was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and his parents also granted him Mexican nationality, registering him at the Mexican embassy in Venezuela. He lived in Venezuela until the age of 12 when he emigrated from his native country.

His first forays into the musical world occurred through family and school parties, even serving as an accompaniment to artists such as Sergio Bustamante.

Teen Tops

In 1957, at the age of 14, Guzmán practiced skating at the Chapultepec Sports Center (in Mexico City). There he met the brothers Jesús and Armando Martínez. Between ride and ride on skates, the idea of forming a musical group with Guzmán, the Martínez brothers and Sergio Martell arose. They named their rock band Los Teen Tops. Initially Guzmán was the bassist of the group, but because the singer (Armando) got a sore throat in his first appearance on a radio program, Guzmán had to take his place, from then on the change was definitive.

  • Enrique Guzmán,
  • Armando Martínez The Manny,
  • Sergio Martell,
  • Jesus The Tutti Martinez and
  • Rogelio Tenorio (whose ephemeral step is almost limited to the photos of the first LP).
  • The Chicken, studio musician, who plays the bass in this LD.

At this time Guzmán composed two songs, Pensaba de ti and La ronchita, although he does not sing in the latter.

From there came the opportunity to appear before a recording company that agreed to give them a chance and this was achieved in the personality of Mr. J. Jesús Hinojosa, from Columbia México, (today Sony), who agreed to record them under his account and risk, since the genre did not guarantee sales to managers, given its nature and because only established artists were sure success.

The first 78 rpm single (hardcover disc) they recorded contained the songs La plaga and El rock de la cárcel, which happened to be Spanish adaptations of the songs Good Golly Miss Molly, by Little Richard and Jailhouse Rock, by Elvis Presley. But these Spanish versions were a great success. In that same period they recorded their first long play that included the aforementioned hits, as well as others that were formulated under the same tonic of adaptation to Spanish, to mention:

  • Secondary trustee
  • Good rock tonight.
  • Lucila
  • Sad and lonely girl
  • I want to be free
  • King criollo
  • Keep calling.
  • Larguirucha Sally

Without the Teen Tops and family life

  • In 1961 Enrique Guzmán recorded his first album as a soloist — already without Los Teen Tops. Include 100 kilos of mud (A Hundred Pounds of Clay) as soloist, with the orchestra and choirs of Chuck Anderson. Given the success he had as a soloist, there would be other recordings like "My heart sings", "Your head on my shoulder" both successes of Paul Anka, thus recording his first solo LP, occupying the first places of success lists in Latin America, being considered the singer of America. Later recordings would confirm that since melody was recording, it was a sure success.
  • He studied at the Faculty of Medicine at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, although he did not finish his career.
  • He had a girlfriend with the singer Angelica María, "La Novia de México", when both were idols of the youth.
  • In 1966, he starred in the film "Acompáñame" with the singer Rocío Dúrcal. It was recorded in Spain, with great success, even more sentimental when apparently there was a relationship, given that both the Mexican and Spanish press gave the marriage as done, which did not happen.[chuckles]required]
  • In 1967, he recorded the melody "Teresa", considered his last great success, prior to the marriage with Silvia Pinal. It began in 1968 to diminish its popularity.
  • In 1971 he recorded two more melodies, "In that same place" and "Morir of Love", which had no good acceptance.
  • He was married to Mexican actress Silvia Pinal, with whom he had two sons: the singer Alejandra Guzmán and the musician Luis Enrique Guzmán.
  • With Silvia had a variety program, called Silvia and Enriquewhich lasted several seasons, and acted in several films.
  • Made comedy papers like Bartolo TarasWhen he had his own TV show.
  • During Silvia and Enrique's variety program he played "Codelio" and Silvia Pinal a "Pichicata", in addition to an Argentinean gangster called "Baby Face". In this series they always gave a touch of joy and good humor to the program (which they decided to end along with their character Bartolo, as this "personage" was gaining the way to their already long trajectory in those moments and people recognized him on the street as Bartolo and not as Enrique Guzmán).[chuckles]required]
  • At the beginning of the 1970s, a theatre play called "Sugar" was staged with the actor Héctor Bonilla with great success, since it was several months in a poster.
  • In 1977 he filmed the film in Spain They prefer them crazy.where he stared at a homosexual: "The Liz Flower."
  • In 1982 he won the Mexican stage of the OTI Festival with the theme With and for love. At the international end, held in Lima, Peru, was held in a 4. place, tied with Costa Rica, behind Venezuela, Spain and the United States.
  • In 1994 he opened a nightclub—in South Insurgentes, where he presented himself for live seasons—with the name of his flagship song. The plague (which was also the first success of her daughter Alejandra Guzmán), when she started her career as a singer.
  • He had heart complications that required hospitalization, and a coronary angiogram was necessary.

Since 1979, he has been married to Rosalba Wélter Portes Gil (niece of Linda Christian and daughter of the painter Rosalba Portes Gil, daughter of Emilio Portes Gil, president of Mexico from 1928 to 1930) and with her He has 2 children: Daniela and Enrique. Daniela Guzmán has already participated in plays and musicals; while Enrique works as an aviator pilot.

Disputes

During the last decades, the personality of Enrique Guzmán has been the object of media attention by those who describe him as a person with a bad character. In February 2006, during a presentation at the Arena Monterrey, singer Alberto Vázquez accused Guzmán of having pushed him roughly, causing him to almost fall off the stage that they both shared that night. According to the statement, this had occurred after Guzmán became intolerant of Vázquez's delay in finishing his act and not allowing him to continue. Alberto Vázquez would say in this regard: & # 34; There is no point in talking to him, he is a very negative person and I am not interested, everyone who does his job and that's it & # 34;. That same year, the television station TV Azteca invited Guzmán to be part of the panel of critics of the television program Desafío de estrellas, judging singers such as Yuridia, Carlos Rivera and Aranza during his stay. Throughout the season, the singer criticized his fellow panelist Jesús Gallegos, claiming: "I don't think he's an expert in music." Later programs he also had differences with another of the judges, the producer José Luis Cornejo, who even decided not to appear during a program before the final.

In 2012, actress Lorena Velázquez accused Enrique Guzmán of having hit her during the presentation of the play "Hay buen rock tonight" in which both shared the scene. In a subsequent press conference, the singer declared: "I haven't touched anything for Lorena, not even her buttocks." In response, Velázquez noted that she would be resigning from the play, partly because of pressure Guzmán had exerted on the producer to get her fired from it. The actress told the media that on the day of the play's premiere, Enrique Guzmán had threatened the producer not to go on stage if they did not fire her and made her apologize on her knees. In March 2017, after the producer Carla Estrada announced her intention to make a biographical series about the life of Silvia Pinal, Enrique Guzmán denied giving up the use of his image for the production of it. The singer declared: "I sent my lawyer, if I ask for money it is because my name and my career are registered".

In January 2018, the singer was once again the subject of two controversies. The first; after declaring to the media that the health of his friend José José was very delicate, that there was very little hope and that he had already said goodbye to him. José José's family responded that they did not know where Guzmán had gotten that information, denying it at the moment. The second; during an interview for the medium "Escandala". While the reporter Enrique Galdeano was interviewing him together with Angélica María and César Costa, Guzmán decided to end the interview just seconds after Galdeano asked him his opinion regarding the LGBT community, answering him with the phrase: "puñales ha there has always been". Enrique Guzmán's attitude was described as homophobic and intolerant, although some comments also criticized the form of informal interview that Galdeano used.

Complaints of sexual harassment

In April 2021, her granddaughter, Frida Sofía Guzmán, denounced in an interview with the driver Gustavo Adolfo Infante that he abused her when she was a child:

He was a very nasty man, he was a very abusive man. I was scared. He did ugly things to me. He's been holding me since I was five.

On April 8, Enrique denied the accusations in the program Ventaneando, in networks it was disapproved of giving him a space "disgusting to defend a rapist”.

In this context, other episodes of abuse by the singer were mentioned on social networks: in an interview with Verónica Castro on the program Mala Noche ¡No! where she touches the host's chest, in the program La Movida his daughter Alejandra Guzmán mentions that "they have to tie his hands" Referring to the fact that there is touching, Verónica asked him "Also with you?" and the singer hugs Alejandra saying that they can't blame him for it & # 34; she's my daughter, she's great! & # 34;.

In 2018, she said that women are to blame for sexual harassment for wearing cleavage: “women will be flirtatious all their lives, what you can't do is say 'they raped me' later. Why do they provoke?", was the singer's statement after unveiling the plaque for the 100 performances of the play Dos más dos.

Legacy

Enrique Guzmán has been recognized by multiple singers and authors, including Joan Sebastian, Juan Gabriel, Joaquín Sabina, Rocío Dúrcal, Cristian Castro, Sin Bandera, Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé, Mijares, Emmanuel, Pedro Fernández, Pepe Aguilar, Alejandro Fernández and Miguel Ríos who accompanied him during a concert to commemorate his 35th anniversary in 1995. Juan Gabriel himself had worked as Guzmán's backup singer in his early days. Years later, the singer-songwriter composed the song "Que vuelves" as a thank you. Juan Gabriel went so far as to say that he had two favorite songs outside of his repertoire, one of them was the song by Enrique Guzmán "Te Necesito", the other was "Júrame" by Maria Grever.

Despite the differences they had sharing a panel of critics in the program "La Academia", Arturo López Gavito would say: "in the face of Enrique Guzmáns career, I couldnt do anything more than kiss his mano". During 2017, Guzmán celebrated 60 years of career with a concert at the National Auditorium in which he pointed out: "The balance of my life is good, my mistakes, my successes, everything adds up. I thank life, it has been total and noble with me. I have a mark that not everyone can leave it. My name causes smiles and they shake my hand, I don't think there is anyone more satisfied than me. This life is the best life and today I share it with you."
