Prince Henry of Denmark (born Henri de Laborde de Monpezat), (Talence, June 11, 1934 - Fredensborg, February 13, 2018) He was the consort of Queen Margaret II of Denmark. In 2016 he retired from public life, renouncing his title as prince consort.

Biography

Son of Andrés de Laborde (1907-1998), Count of Monpezat, and Renée-Yvonne Doursennot (1908-2001), he spent his childhood in French Indochina (Vietnam), where his father had business interests.

On June 10, 1967, he married Princess Margaret of Denmark, then heir to the Danish Crown and later queen and head of state of that country. The wedding took place in Holmen Church in Copenhagen. As a result of this marriage, princes Federico and Joaquín were born.

The prince consort retired as of January 1, 2016, as announced by the queen in her end-of-year speech. On September 6, 2017, specialists at the Kingdom Hospital announced that Prince Henry was suffering from dementia.

He died on the night of February 13, 2018 at Fredensborg Palace at 11:18 p.m. (local time).

His funeral took place in the chapel of Christiansborg Palace, seat of the Danish Parliament.

He was cremated on February 20, 2018 and his ashes were scattered equally: half in the Danish Sea and the other half was deposited in the private gardens of Fredensborg Palace.

During his life he denied not having obtained the title of king consort and his secondary role in the Danish Court, where his son occupied, protocolically, a higher position than him. The prince consort declared during his lifetime that: “If the queen wants me to be buried with her, she will have to name me king.” The latter never happened.

Writer

He published the following books: Chemin faisant (1982, poetry), Destin oblige (1996, biographies), Ikke altid Gåselever (1999, cookbook, in collaboration), Cantabile (2000, poetry with illustrations, in collaboration - the symphonic suite Cantabile by Frederik Magle is based on this book), Les escargots de Marie Lanceline (2003), Murmures de vent (2004), Roue-libre / Frihjul (2010, poetry), Fabula (2011, poetry), La part des anges (2013, poetry) and Dans mes nuits sereines (2014, poetry).
