Emily Watson
Emily Margaret Watson (Islington, London, January 14, 1967) is a British stage, film and television actress.
She began her career on stage, joining the Royal Shakespeare Theater Company in 1992. Her debut role in the 1996 film Breaking the Waves quickly made her a star, earning her first nomination to the Oscar award. She was nominated again for her role in the drama Hilary and Jackie in 1998. In 2002 she successfully starred in the plays Twelfth Night and Uncle Vanya, receiving the Olivier Award for the latter. Her leading role in the 2011 television drama Appropriate Adult garnered her a BAFTA for Best Actress.
Throughout his extensive filmography, he has played both leading and secondary roles in films of various kinds and genres. Some of his most important films are: Angela's Ashes in 1999, The Luzhin Defense in 2000, Gosford Park in 2001, Drunk on Love 2002, Red Dragon 2002, Equilibrium 2002, Call Me Peter 2004, Corpse Bride 2005, Miss Potter 2006, The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep 2007, Synecdoche, New York 2008, Oranges and Sunshine from 2010, War Horse from 2011, The Book Thief from 2013, The Theory of Everything from 2014, Everest from 2015 and Genius from 2017. In 2019 she plays the role of the scientist Ulana Khomyuk, in the HBO miniseries & # 34; Chernobyl & # 34;.
Biography
She had always been interested in acting and although her first application to acting school was rejected, she persevered and spent several years in plays for the Royal Shakespeare Company where she worked from 1990-96.
Watson's first appearance on the big screen was in the 1996 film Breaking the Waves, directed by the Danish Lars von Trier. In Breaking the Waves Watson played Bess McNeil, a woman blindly in love with her husband to the point of submitting to anything to prove her love. This drama earned her two best actress nominations for the Golden Globe and the Oscar.
In 1997 Watson returned to film with The Mill on the Floss, The Boxer and Metroland. In 1999, again as in 1996, Watson was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of British cellist Jacqueline du Pré in the film Hilary and Jackie . In 1999 he acted in Cradle Will Rock, released in Spain as Down the Curtain, directed by Tim Robbins, and Angela's Ashes, an adaptation of the novel Angela's Ashes written by Frank McCourt and winner of a Pulitzer Prize.
Throughout his career, Watson has alternated films by cult directors, such as Robert Altman (Gosford Park) and Alan Parker (Angela's Ashes ), with other more commercial ones, by directors like Tim Burton (Corpse Bride) and Steven Spielberg (War Horse). In 2002 she took part in Red Dragon , a film belonging to the film saga about the character of Hannibal Lecter.
In 2010, playing social worker Margaret Humphreys in Oranges and Sunshine, she received several awards for her work.
Watson married Jack Waters in 1995 and their daughter, Juliet, was born in 2005 followed by Dylan in 2008.
Watson received the Donostia Award at the 2015 edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival in recognition of his career.
