Elytrigia
Elytrigia is a genus of herbaceous plants in the Poaceae family. It has around twenty species native to temperate regions. They are considered weeds, among which the best known is Elytrigia repens.
Some authors consider it included in the genera Agropyron, Elymus. It comprises 158 described species and of these, only 8 accepted.
Taxonomy
The genus was described by Nicaise Augustin Desvaux and published in Nouveau Bulletin des Sciences, published by the Société Philomatique de Paris 2: 190. 1810. The type species is: Elytrigia repens Dev.
- Cytology
The basic chromosome number of the genus is x = 7, with somatic chromosome numbers of 2n = 42, or 56, or 84 (rarely), as there are diploid species and a polyploid series.
- Etymology
Elytrigia: Generic name that may derive from either the Greek elytron for "envelope or cover", or a combination of the generic names Elymus and Triticum.
