Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport
Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (IATA: ATH, ICAO: LGAV) is the only civil airport serving the city of Athens, Greece. The airport is the main operating base and hub for Olympic Airlines, Greece's state airline, as well as Aegean Airlines. It began operating on March 29, 2001.
Features
The airport is located between the towns of Markopoulo, Koropi, Spata and Loutsa, about 20 kilometers east of the center of Athens. The airport was named in honor of the Cretan Eleftherios Venizelos, an important politician and former Prime Minister of Greece, who played an important role in the Cretan uprising against the Ottoman occupation of Crete in 1896.
It currently has two terminals, the Main Terminal and the Satellite Terminal, which is accessed through a tunnel from the Main Terminal. The slopes have an extension of approximately 4 km. The airport was built by a public-private consortium. Greece retains 55% of the shares. It is considered one of the most expensive airports in Europe, since its restaurants and cafes pay high rents, as well as airlines, which have to pay high commissions for using the airport. The airport was recognized with the title of 'European Airport of the Year 2004', within the framework of the annual awards carried out by the Institute of Transport Management (ITM).

The airport was designed to undergo future expansions to cope with growing passenger traffic. The expansions were planned to be carried out in six phases. The first phase (current phase) allows the airport to operate with 16 million passengers per year. The sixth phase will allow the airport to handle traffic of 50 million passengers per year.
In 2010, the airport recorded traffic of 15,411,099 passengers, 5.0% less than in 2009.
A train station next to the airport terminal (and accessible via an elevated pedestrian bridge) was inaugurated on the occasion of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. The station allows access to Line 3 of the Athens Metro and to the Proastiakos suburban train service. The airport is also accessed via the Attiki Odos Highway.
In 2005 and 2006, the airport was recognized by Skytrax as the best airport in Southern Europe.

The airport replaced the old Hellinikon International Airport.
Robotic security

The new airport is equipped with two robotic systems (named 'Hercules' and 'Ulysses'), capable of handling suspicious devices, and were designed to protect people and facilities of the airport by safely identifying and removing explosives.
Hercules was donated by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to the airport. It is a system capable of safely collecting and transporting explosives for destruction. It is equipped with a spherical-shaped tank with a diameter of 120 cm and two robotic arms.
Ulysses is a system valued at €94,000, donated by Soukos Robots ABEE. This system was manufactured to serve as a supplement to the Hercules robot, since it can access hard-to-reach places such as bathrooms, buses or aircraft. It is a light but very efficient robot, equipped with a system that absorbs shocks and allows movements on uneven surfaces.
Indirectly related incidents
- On 14 August 2005, Helios Airways flight 522, a Boeing 737-300 (5B-DBY) crashed in the vicinity of Grammatikon (Attika) while flying from Larnaca International Airport in Cyprus to Venizelos Eleftherios International Airport.
