El Tri (band)
El Tri or before Three Souls in My Mind is a Rock en Español band, the most emblematic Mexican rock group, founded in 1984 and led by Alejandro Lora, known as Álex Lora, after leaving the band Three Souls in My Mind in 1981.
The group has sold more than 30 million records in their career and has had five Grammy Award nominations under the category of Best Rock Album in Spanish for their albums: When you're not here (1998), End of the century (1999), We can't fly (2001), and 35 Years and What still missing (2005) and Best Rock Vocal Duo or Group Album for Alex Lora: Del Three a El Tri (40 songs from the soul. My mind and my clinging) (2009). In 1971 Three Souls in My Mind participated in the Avandaro Rock and Wheels Festival.
History
Emerging in the late 60's, Álex Lora and his group originally called Three Souls in my Mind became the pioneer rock group in Mexico. In his beginnings most of his compositions were made in English.
Background (1968 - 1984)
On October 1, 1968 Carlos "Charly" Hauptvogel (drums) and Álex Lora (vocals) formed the rock and roll group Three Souls in My Mind with Miguel "El Zoita" Flores (Javier's younger brother "El Zoa", then from Los Sinners, and more recently, his descendants, Naftalina) on bass, Javier Bátiz's young brother-in-law, José Pampín on requinto, and Álex himself on guitar, they came to be called Three Souls In My Mind Rock and Roll Band México City, but later returned to simply Three Souls In My Mind.
The ex-keyboardist of Los Locos del Ritmo, Lalo Toral, worked with the record company Cisne Raff and convinced TSIMM to sign with the label. And in 1968, as proof, they recorded the single "El abuelo" and "Qué noche". Two years later (1970) they entered the studio with the engineer Ernesto de la Cruz to record their first album entitled Colección Avándaro, vol. 1 which includes songs in English and Spanish. Halfway through the recording Miguel Flores went to the Netherlands and Ernesto "Ernie" recommended Toño Limón to take the place. The following year they released their second album titled Colección Avándaro, vol. 2, sung all in English and which included three songs from the previous album: “Lennon Blues”, “Let me Swim”, and “Don't Ask me”, with lyrics by Lora who dominated language. At that time Roberto Milchorena enters who appears on the cover and that later in the 80s, he would emigrate to El Salvador to work as a musician and producer.
The band's style was considered acid rock on the first two albums. Later the writer Parménides García Saldaña convinced the band to stop playing acid rock and switch to rhythm and blues letting their hair grow, which was a representative style of the genre. [citation required] With their third album Oye, bartender, the band became recognized in Mexico since this third album is in Spanish and included the title track that is still popular among the band's fans. After this album, the band decided to sing in Spanish because most of their followers did not understand the songs in English. In total, the band recorded 15 LPs, 13 in the studio and one double recorded live at the Reclusorio Oriente.
On September 11 and 12, 1971, the band participated in the Avandaro Rock and Wheels Festival in Mexico, where more than 300,000 people came together peacefully. At the Three Souls in My Mind festival they shared the stage with El Ritual, Tinta Blanca, Love Army, Los Dug Dug's, Fer y sus cuates, and Peace and Love, among others. The festival helped Three Souls and the other bands present to expose their music and build a fan base. By the mid-1980s, Three Souls In My Mind had become a rock phenomenon throughout Latin America. A few years after this event, Sergio Mancera entered on guitar and replaced Ernesto de León. Ernesto de León left to create his own rock and blues band Banda Óscar de León.
Early days of El Tri (1981 - 1984)
At the beginning of the 80s, the vocalist and guitarist Álex Lora married his girlfriend of years, Celia García, creating some friction with the drummer Charly, because the group up to that moment had worked independently and with a certain informality when closing contracts. Celia began to intervene in financial affairs and in the management of the group, which is why the working relationship began to crack. While, on the one hand, Lora complained that Hauptvogel did not attend rehearsals or presentations, he felt that Celia was trying to pay him as a salaryman, since he was the founder of the band. In 1984, the group broke up after 15 years together. On the one hand, Hauptvogel retained the legal rights to the name Three Souls In My Mind, while Alejandro Lora retained the rights to all the group's classic compositions, as well as practically all the elements that made up the band at that time follow him in his new musical project called El Tri, which by the way was what the fans called him colloquially and finally it stuck as the definitive name.
Just
In 1985, El Tri signed with the multinational label Warner Music (WEA) after it bought the label the band was on (Comrock). The results were positive for the band since, around this time, Mexican national rock was beginning to be accepted by the national press. The first album under the new name was released in 1984 titled Simply. The album was a financial triumph for the band, as it became the first Mexican rock album to earn a gold record for sales of over 100,000 copies. The first single from the album was Sad Song which became a phenomenon around Latin America and took the band to South American countries for the first time.
The Rest of the Eighties
The following year, Simplemente continued to win over new fans with the second single “Vicioso” which became a hit on the charts in Peru. With this success, El Tri traveled to that country in 1986 and performed two great concerts in the Plaza de Toros de Acho. The success was such that the following year he returned to tour seven more cities. In that same year, Miguel Ríos invited them to participate in the festival of the first Ibero-American rock meeting at the Palacio de los Deportes in the city of Madrid, Spain. This is how they would promote their new album Hecho en México.
In mid-1985, the band released their second album Hecho en México. The following year the album Niño sin amor was released. With the single of the same name, El Tri began to explore social issues while consolidating itself as a rock and roll band in Spanish. The album was certified multi-platinum and is considered one of the band's best[citation required].
In 1987, the album titled Otra tocada más came out with songs like "Harmful to health", "Seguro de vida", " Sarah" (referring to Rafael Caro Quintero's partner) and "Caseta de cobro". In this album we can also appreciate the new member, the bassist Rubén Soriano.
In 1988, the band recorded their first live album as El Tri titled Live from Santa Martha jail. The album brought the band their first double-platinum record despite the fact that WEA did not provide any promotion for the record.
In 1989 the band celebrated 21 years of rock and roll with their album 21 years later... Alex Lora y El Tri. The singles were “María Sabina”, “Difficult”, “El as no conocido” and “Un Día en la vida”. Around these years, the new drummer and chorister Pedro Martínez entered, who years later would be a prominent drummer for the song “Pobre Soñador”. However, Pedro Martínez did not play on the album 21 years later but rather the ex-drummer of the group Enigma, Héctor “Virgo” Zenil who contributed a dynamic and original sound to the album and with whom they would perform their promotional concerts in the city of Los Angeles, California.
The 1990s
In 1990, the band traveled to Los Angeles to record their first album in the United States A living legend called El Tri. The singles from the album were “Viejas de vecindad” and “Millions of children”, this one dedicated to the millions of poor children around the world. With this Sergio Mancera album, the guitarist says goodbye to the band, since this would be his last studio album with them.
In 1991, the band released another live album titled Live from the Hollywood Palladium. This album was a demonstration that the band could fill concert halls in the United States. The band recorded this concert on VHS although this item is not available in the band's official store.
In 1992, the band released another studio album titled Undocumented. His first single was the same name, dedicated to illegal migrants between Mexico and the United States. It also pays homage to the great teacher and singer of children's music, Cri Cri with his song “When he sings the cricket”.
In 1993, El Tri made history again with his album 25 años. Their first single, “Poor Dreamer”, opened up more horizons for the band, similar to their other hit Simply, and helps keep the band alive and among the best known internationally. In 1993, the Argentine band La Renga published the sad song on their second album Where life takes me, which triggered the first rapprochement between El Tri and the Argentine public.
On the tour of the album 25 Años (1993 - 1994) the band recorded a live double album titled Un Cuarto de Siglo which was released in 1995. The rocker Kenny Avilés, vocalist of Kenny y Los Eléctricos, Zbigniew Paleta (violin), and pianists Eduardo Toral and Gerardo “El pájaro” García participated in the concert. In 1994, the band got another hit with the single “Las piedras rodantes” on the album Una rola para los minusválidos. This single appeared as the official theme song for the film Un Año Perdido and won an Ariel for Best Song/Song of the Year. Álex Lora also included a track on the 1994 Zapatista rebellion of the EZLN (Zapatista Army of National Liberation).
Shortly after this, the band was invited by MTV to record an unplugged and would be the third rock band to do so (after Café Tacvba and Caifanes). But due to disagreements between the WEA band's label and MTV, El Tri Unplugged did not go on sale until nine years later in 2004. Now the DVD of this concert is also available.
In 1996, the band released the album Hoyos En La Bolsa with the singles “Todo por el rock and roll (Rocanrol)” and “Hoyos en la bolsa”. The album has messages of political and economic consciousness, addressing a large number of social issues. This album was also the last for Pedro Martínez and Rubén Soriano as they both left the band for unknown reasons. Ramón Pérez would take Martínez's place for the next recording and Lora would take Soriano's place on bass.
In 1997, El Tri "conquered" Peru, being part of the Rock Beach held at El Silencio beach located south of Lima, where 200,000 people gather on November 2, a record attendance. That same year the band invited Carlos Santana to collaborate on the single “Virgen Morena” as a guitarist, under the album Cuando tú no estás whose other single is with the same name. The album brought him his first nomination for the prestigious Grammy Award for Rock Album of the Year. Álex also invited Víctor Trujillo, the famous Brozo the Tenebrozo Clown, to collaborate with the introduction of the song “El muchacho chicho”. And this album did not lack social and political themes either, for example “Pirate Copies”.
In 1998 the band recorded the album with the appropriate name Fin de Siglo. The singles were “Nostalgia” and “Everything goes wrong for me”. This album has a clearer mix of blues and rock. This album was nominated for a Grammy for Rock Album of the Year. This album is the first of the band that contains software options since when the disc is inserted into a computer, a file with photos, history, jokes and games as well as the discography of the band automatically opens. band.
Symphonic
In the fall of 1998, the band recorded live with symphony at the National Auditorium (for the first time) and in the spring the album titled Sinfónico was released. The symphonic idea helps toast El Tri's 30 years of uninterrupted rock and roll. They also release their first DVD of this concert. The album was certified multi-platinum shortly after its release and is considered by many fans to be the band's best concert ever.[citation needed]
2000
In 2000, the band releases We can't fly and with it, the singles “We can't fly” and “Madre Tierra” as a duet with Miguel Ríos. The band also invites A.N.I.M.A.L., Caballo Dorado and Alberto Ángel "El Cuervo", to collaborate on duets with Lora. This album was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Rock Album of the Year. Chela Lora also returned to record another song titled "Prueba de amor".
In 2001, Alex collaborated again with the Metropolitan Philharmonic Symphony and recorded a symphonic album titled Sinfónico 2. The album has access to similar computer bonus material on the song “Fin de Siglo”. The album would be considered by Álex Lora as the band's best project to date.
In 2002, the band released the album No Te Olvides de la Banda. The singles are "Solamente Dios", "No te olvides de la banda" and "De la raza pa' the band". That same year the band released a documentary DVD of the life of the band entitled Slave to rock and roll. The DVD is also not available on the band's official store.
In 2003, almost 20 years after not releasing Best Hits, the band released a double album with the best of El Tri titled Las número uno del Tri 1968/2003. That same year, the band made history again with the live double album titled Alex Lora 35 years and what he still lacks..., recorded at the National Auditorium. This album shows the return of Sergio "El Cóndor" Mancera as guitarist, Mariano Soto as drummer and Arturo "El Papaíto" Labastida on sax. The band also invites the ethnic group La Tribu, "El Maestro" Armando Manzanero, Johnny Laboriel, Kenny Avilés and Rod Levario, lead singer of the rock band Heavy Nopal whose guitarist would be Sergio Mancera. Horacio Reni was also invited. Soon after, the DVD of the concert was also released. Again this album brought the band a Grammy Award nomination for Rock Album of the Year.
In 2004, Álex Lora invited the “Ex-Tri”, Sergio “El Cóndor” Mancera, Mariano Soto, and Arturo "El Papaíto" Labastida, to play together at the great concert 35 Years and What's Still Missing at the National Auditorium in Mexico City. It was almost 15 years since "El Cóndor" Mancera did not play with El Tri. Together they played the classic songs: San Juanico, Juanita, and Poor Children. The following year, Lora invited "El Papaíto" to play the sax on the rock and blues song “Queremos rock” from the album Más allá del bien y del mal. 2008 marks the band's 40th anniversary with a series of commemorative concerts.

In 2005, the band breaks relations with the WEA label. It is believed that it was because Álex Lora wanted to become independent from the label since he started his own Lora Records under Fonovisa.
In an interview with the portal El Entrepiso de Argentina, Álex answered the question why he decided to edit Más allá del bien y del mal through Lora Records, saying that "What we did with this record was bring our new music to life, because we were at a record company that, like all record companies, doesn't make new music anymore."What we did with this record was bring our new music to life, because we were at a record company that, like all record companies, doesn't make new music anymore.
And in that same year El Tri debuted with Lora Records under the production and distribution of Fonovisa, with the album Más allá del bien y del mal. It is interesting to note that there is a new member in the band, bassist Carlos Valerio. This new member did not have such an image in the media. Lora also returned as a guitarist since Valerio took Lora's place on bass.
The album is full of social issues. The album includes a DVD of the band with access to Making the record, photos, videos and special images of the band.
During the month of January, El Tri returned to Argentina, after 7 years (they had performed, with very little diffusion in 1999, with a show in Buenos Aires and as guests with La Renga, at the Patinodromo Municipal de Sea of the Silver). The bands Resortera, Royal Club and Toxina Boogie opened the concert. This to continue promoting the album Más allá del bien y del mal.
On January 23 and 29, 2007 the band released their most recent production entitled Directo desde el otro lado. A live production from the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City in California that concludes with 12 songs including the new single “El Muro”, which talks about the recent proposal approved in the US House of Representatives to build a wall between the border with Mexico. The topic has been very controversial, which explains Lora's interest in writing a song about it. In May the album A talonear was released, which has eleven unpublished songs.
In November 2007, the radio program "La hora de Lora" with a weekly broadcast programming music from Álex Lora's career and his entire discography. The program is listened to throughout different countries through the Internet and has its own space which is www.myspace.com/lahoradelora hosted by Miguel "Loco" Angulo being present in the program on some occasion Álex Lora himself.

In 2013 they released Ojo Por Ojo, an album that has a new and fresh sound compared to their previous albums. This material has gone almost unnoticed by the media, with 9 compositions by Alex and one by Emma Elena Valdelamar and one more by Pepe Garza. However it is a well made and new production. As a single to this album they released "Contigo me conformo". In not very outstanding opinions in large diffusions, they consider that on this album the guitars take a backseat.

Issues and social positions
The lyrics generally talk about what it is to be a young rocker, although they also touch on themes such as love, bad luck, melancholy, loneliness and even talk about influential issues in society such as irregular immigration, movements revolutionaries of the continent, the Latin American races, in addition to a few criticisms of the corruption of Mexican politicians, all this always with lyrics full of mischief, humor and irony. Álex has been named by the media "The chronicler of rock and roll in Mexico", since he has become one of the few (rock) singers who each year writes at least one song on a subject crucial that affects Mexico.
Álex Lora has let his thoughts on piracy be known, answering «As a musician, when you invent your songs, what you want is for the greatest number of people possible to hear them, and you don't care how they get to hear her At one point, us real rock and roll bands are not interested in selling records, and we have to thank the pirates, who have promoted us, because our companies have not done it." The band is considered the most pirated in Mexico and Peru. One of his songs, "We are all pirates", was a single dedicated to all the people who buy pirated things.
Musical style and member rotation
The difference between the drumming styles of Martínez and Pérez became apparent as soon as members were rotated. For example, Martínez gave the songs a heavier sound and Pérez has opted for a softer sound. This difference can be seen in the album Cuando tú no estás, Pérez's first with the band.
The band has been influenced by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles
Altruism
In addition to including lyrics of encouragement for people with disabilities in her songs, as well as setting an example for completely healthy people, Lora has collaborated with various personalities and civil institutions to help disabled people, citing Jorge Garralda and his television program "To whom it corresponds", where he appears on various occasions making donations of wheelchairs, crutches, and urging the public to combat discrimination against this highly vulnerable group.
Likewise, El Tri "sponsored" (financed) insurance for the repatriation of Mexican citizens who die in the United States. This is because, in Lora's own words: «This is a problem that many people do not even imagine; they don't know the amount of paperwork it takes to bring the body of a dead relative from the other side. When you least expect it and when you see how it's done, the body is already in a common grave and well, it's cannon! (sic). I want at least that it be done like the song by Pedro (Infante), that they say that I am asleep, but that they bring me here" said Álex Lora, interviewed by El Universal.
Álex Lora was distinguished on October 23, 2008 with his star on the Walk of Fame in Las Vegas, which coincided with the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the creation of the band. For this action, Lora said: " I feel very honored and grateful for the tribute I will receive in a city as important as Las Vegas " and dedicated his star to his audience and his country.

In the fall of 1998 during the End of the Century tour, Álex Lora came out to play wearing a T-shirt with the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe printed on it. Since then, Lora almost always wears a T-shirt with an image of the Virgin printed on it.
In 2002, the single from the album Don't forget the band was “Solamente Dios”. Again, a direct dedication to God. And on the album Más allá del bien y del mal he dedicated a song to John Paul II.
Launch of Mezcal
On December 6, 2006, through the band's page www.eltri.com.mx and the band's official site on Myspace, the news was released that the band would release their version of mezcal. According to Lora himself, the purpose of this launch has good roots since, in addition to celebrating another year of existence, more than 600 Oaxacan indigenous families dedicated to producing that typical drink are helped. In relation to this drink, Lora has He also mentioned that "one of the objectives of producing mezcal is to give work to the marginalized people of the highlands of Oaxaca" and that "(it is the drink that) the Pope drinks when he goes to talk to God ».
