The ski resort of El Morredero was a station that was located in the Montes Aquilianos in the El Bierzo region, in the province of León, autonomous community of Castilla y León, Spain. Since 2008 it has been inoperative when the lifts broke down and in 2020 the Ponferrada city council, to which it belongs, has announced its decision to completely dismantle the station.

Description

Located near the Leonese town of Ponferrada and in its municipal area (corresponding to the villages of Peñalba de Santiago and Bouzas), it comprises a small portion of land of only 4 kilometers and currently consists of two ski slopes with telecinta. The quality of the snow and the low cost of the ski pass stand out. Its last remodeling dates back to 2002, with the date of its initial inauguration being officially unknown. The Association of Friends of Morredero is responsible for its management.

The projected expansion is partly developed on land in the towns of Corporales and Noceda de Cabrera.

Both the ski resort and Alto del Morredero had a surge in popularity in the summer of 1997 when a stage of the Vuelta Ciclista a España finished there.

It currently has expansion projects requested from the local administration of the Ponferrada City Council. This proposal, pending approval, has caused controversy among local political groups when it was compared, by its political promoters, with the project of La Covatilla in Béjar given the urban problems that have occurred in this project.

The construction of a road is planned to connect the regions of El Bierzo and La Cabrera passing through the ski resort, which would significantly facilitate access to it.

In January 2013, the first lift of the station expansion, a conveyor belt, was awarded.

Services

Material rental. The expansion project includes the creation of a ski school, infirmary and cafeteria service.
