Eduardo Soto Moreno (Mataró, Barcelona, May 20, 1978), better known as Edu Soto, is a Spanish actor, comedian and singer.

Biography

Catalan by birth and parents born and raised in Águilas (Murcia), where the actor spent a large part of his childhood and youth, Edu Soto dedicated himself completely to acting out of absolute vocation. He discovered his vocation while performing a play for his high school when he was in secondary education, which took 7 years to complete, repeating the course several times. Although one of his main desires was to dedicate himself to sports, mainly basketball, which he played since he was little, he did not know exactly what to do with his life, so he decided not to take the university entrance test and study theater for two years in a private school.

A few years later he decided to appear at a casting for El Terrat encouraged by a colleague of his, thus attending the test in an interview in which Andreu Buenafuente played Jesús Quintero. Edu was asked to play a geek. That same day Mario Olivetti was born, a character he embodied in Una altra algo , and with whom he had great success. From that moment on he began to be part of the Buenafuente team, and after that, he became one of the most important comic actors and comedians in Catalonia. He performed in different circuses throughout Spain. He was known as the Catalan clown.

Later he worked again with Andreu Buenafuente on his Antena 3 program (later broadcast on La Sexta) with well-known characters such as El Neng de Castefa, el Notario and Miguel Chiclé (parody of Michael Bublé, who ended up becoming Javi Williams, a parody of Robbie Williams, and later in James Bluff, by James Blunt), and which brought him national fame.

He started taking singing classes as a hobby, eventually having his own band called "D2", and he also writes theater and poetry. He claims that he is always late everywhere.

It was a great honor for him to be named crier of the Vilasar de Mar festivities in the summer of 2004.

In 2004 he lent his voice to Averell Dalton for the Spanish dubbed version of The Daltons vs. Lucky Luke along with José Corbacho, who dubbed Joe Dalton.

In the 2005 edition of Ja Ja Festival (Zaragoza film and humor festival), Edu won the award for best comedian of the year, for originality in the creation of a character, his interpretive freshness and ability to surprise us.

In 2006 he lent his voice to the squirrel Hammy for the Spanish dubbed version of Invading Neighbors.

In 2007 he presented the contest El rey de la comedia, on TVE, together with Esther Arroyo.

Also in 2007, The Moon in the Bottle was released in theaters, a film starring Soto.

In 2008 he joined the comedy space Boquería 357 along with Santi Millán, a TV3 program where he plays different characters.

Also in 2008, he played Mortadelo in the Mortadelo y Filemón film, Mortadelo y Filemón. Mission: Save the Earth, produced to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the main characters.

On February 5, 2009 he joined the team of the Spanish version of the comedy show Saturday Night Live and a year later to Lo que dice la blonde, both in Four.

In September 2011, he began directing the space Caserito, caserito on the COPE radio station. Program that he did from his house.

Between 2013 and 2015 he participated in the humorous television program Me resbala in which he has been the winner four times. In 2015 she competed in the Talent show on Antena 3 Your face sounds familiar to me where she came in second place and where she demonstrated her talents as a singer.

Also in 2015 he headed the bill for the musical Cabaret, along with Cristina Castaño, in the version directed by Jaime Azpilicueta. A year later she participated in the staging of the play Incendios, by Wajdi Mouawad, together with Nuria Espert and directed by Mario Gas.

Between March and May 2017 he presented the TVE La 1 space The Wish Tree.

In October 2017 he participated in the second edition of MasterChef Celebrity, along with his colleagues José Corbacho and Silvia Abril, among other popular faces on national television.

In 2019 he was a crier for the Herencia carnival and in that same year he presented the third season of the TVE program, El paisano.

Private life

From 2014 to 2018 he was in a relationship with designer Eva Hurtado. The couple lived in Madrid. In 2019 he began a relationship with the violinist Cristina Pascual. In June 2020 they welcomed their first child together, a boy named Imel, and in May 2022 their daughter, named Nora.

Characters

The Neng of Castefa

El Neng de Castefa is possibly Soto's best-known character. With him he played a young man from the neighborhood, loud and hyperactive, who was obsessed with his car (which he called & # 34; buga & # 34;) and with becoming a DJ. This character was a parody of the urban tribe of machineros from the Barcelona town of Castelldefels (not of the later 'cani' urban culture, as popular belief says), related to the bakala culture of the rest of Spain..

This character was synonymous with his introductory phrase, «What's up, neng!». The name neng comes from the Catalan word nen, which means 'child' or 'baby' and which colloquially takes on a meaning similar to uncle, while that the addition of the letter -g (pronounced as the form of the English gerund -ing) gives it a sound similar to that used in Catalonia by those to whom the character parodied In addition, El Neng stood out for his clothing, which consisted of a green t-shirt with yellow sleeves decorated with the Chinese character 能 on the back (which is pronounced the same way in pinyin, neng), pants in blue tracksuits and sneakers. He also sported a crew cut with tapered sideburns and a pair of cheap sunglasses perched high on his forehead.

Neng's popularity was such that he had his own video game for PlayStation 2. A musical CD (double CD+DVD) was even released in 2005 with the theme of his character in Buenafuente called: What Come in Neng!

The characters of El Jonan de Baraka and El Txori, played by Javier Antón and Diego Pérez in the comedy program Vaya semanita, ETB 2, also emerged as a result of its success.
